Communications Advisor English Outreach
The Negotiations Affairs Department of the PLO is looking for qualified advisors for the following
position to join the Negotiations Support Unit in
Ramallah:
Communications Advisor – English Outreach
Main duties and responsibilities:
1-Assisting the development of an overall strategy for the Communications Department, and leading the development of a strategy for outreach to English media (in the western countries), civil society and public in particular. This will be done in consultation with the Negotiations Affairs Department, the Communications Department’s Coordinator and other communications advisers and may include research through focus groups or discussions with other knowledgeable persons.
2-Advising the Palestinian leadership on strategies and tactics to increase the volume, accuracy and sympathy with which the English media cover Palestinians and Palestinian issues, and explaining the dynamics and interests of the various parties in the English media to that leadership to increase their ability and comfort to interact with it. This may involve regular strategic analyses of issues covered by the English media, daily talking points to respond to the issues‐of‐the‐day, and informal meetings between the leadership and key journalists.
3-Assisting the Palestinian leadership to implement communications strategies and tactics, for example through organizing press conferences, interviews, press releases or other outputs as well as monitoring the impact of those events on the media.
4-Proactively building a network of relationships with representatives of English media and civil society from all political standpoints, and recording the contact details of those representatives for easy access at the NSU.
5-Monitoring coverage of the conflict and negotiation issues by English media.
6-Responding to requests from the English media for briefings on events or issues relating to the peace process; briefings might be given in person or by telephone, or in the field in coordination with the Field Officer.
7-Facilitating interviews, quotes and other forms of access for journalists, analysts and other opinion leaders to the Palestinian political leadership, or other non‐leadership Palestinians of interest.
8-Proactively pitching stories to the English media (in consultation with the Field Officer who will be responsible for identifying suitable stories through field research)
9-Building relationships with a range of Palestinians who have the knowledge and skills to promote Palestinian interests effectively in the media through their own direct interaction with that media.
10-Managing the NAD English language website, including developing the website’s strategy, translating and reviewing all written materials and maps to be posted on the website, regular addition of other relevant Palestinian and non‐Palestinian materials, and responding to inquires sent through the website.
11-Participating in the design of outreach material using various tools such as YouTube, twitter and others and review material before publication.
12-Developing any materials which are first drafted in English for the international audience such as Press Releases and other brief material.
13-On occasion the adviser may be asked by the CD Coordinator or the Project Management to contribute to activities outside this role description in order to help the NSU achieve its goals.
Qualifications, experience and skills required:
1-University degree in Journalism, Communications and Media, Political Science or any other related field.
2-Postgraduate degree in Journalism, Communications and Media or Political Science.
3-A minimum of 6 years of experience in Media.
4-Detailed knowledge of the Palestinian cause and context.
5-Advanced communications and presentation skills.
6-Advanced ability in professional writing in English.
7-Excellent knowledge in International media with focus on English media.
8-Excellent ability in working with MS Office.
9-Fluency in written and spoken Arabic and English.
10-Demonstrated, dynamic, and inter‐personal communications capability and capacity to work within and lead a team.
