Background:

The Palestinian Museum is looking for a motivated and committed individual with a basic knowledge of both the theoretical and practical aspects of the conservation profession, with a high level of manual dexterity and good attention to detail. The Conservator will conserve/preserve items from the Palestinian Museum collections in order to improve the longevity and accessibility of these items guided by professional conservation frameworks and the principle of minimal intervention. S/he will be able to work with limited supervision on routine conservation and preservation tasks but may require guidance from senior colleagues on higher-level more specialised work.

Responsibilities 

  • To undertake the practical conservation of a wide range of selected items from the Museum’s collections using appropriate practices and under limited supervision.
  • To develop treatment options for items requiring conservation within the guiding principle of minimal intervention and adhering to professional conservation frameworks.
  • To provide conservation and preservation support for digitisation projects. 
  • To take ownership of and ensure compliance with relevant security requirements, policy and procedures.
  • To manage work effectively in order to achieve necessary targets.

Main tasks 

  • Complete, under the Conservation Manager supervision, standard conservation treatments on paper-based items from endangered archival collections. This will include:
    • Assessment of items to determine physical condition.
    • Development of treatment options to ensure the improved condition, longevity and accessibility of collection items.
    • Conservation consultations of multiple items or collections to assess and report on their condition and to propose strategies for their care and access.
    • To make decisions about appropriate procedures to use on each collection item.
  • Support digitisation projects, including treating items to enable digitisation.
  • Develop a wider range of conservation and preservation skills and knowledge, as necessary, to ensure project objectives are achieved.
  • Take responsibility for own continuous professional development. The post holder is expected to keep abreast of current conservation and preservation issues and professional ethical developments.
  • Keep written and photographic documentation detailing treatments undertaken on each individual job, time spent, techniques and results of treatments etc.
  • Participate in the Conservation training at the British Library in the United Kingdom.

Job Requirements

Requirements 

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a discipline relevant to the position. 
  • At least one year in non-profit organisation(s), including knowledge of standard conservation treatments on paper-based items from endangered archival collections.
