Overview on YWCA
The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) of Palestine is a right-based nongovernmental association initiated in 1893 by informal groups of Christian women and was formally established in Jerusalem in 1918. We envision a free and democratic civil society where women and youth are empowered to exercise and protect their political, economic, and social rights. YWCA Palestine is affiliated with the World YWCA, a global movement working for women, young women, and girls in over 100 countries. It holds a special consultative status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
Background:
The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) in partnership with Enable will implement a project titled “Mental Health Community-based Awareness Campaign”, to contribute to the protection of vulnerable boys and girls, young women and men, and their caregivers against stigma and taboo surrounding mental health and increase their access to quality mental health and psychosocial support services. The project will be implemented in the Westbank in 6 targeted localities over the period from January 2024 to August 2025. The overall objective of the project is that young people in Palestine have increased access to quality mental health and psychosocial support services.
The project aims to:
- Palestinian youth, especially young women, have increased awareness of the importance of mental health and help-seeking strategies within their communities.
- Youths have actively engaged duty bearers and policymakers to improve MHPSS responses and national youth mental health policies.
More specifically, the project main activities that will take place during the two years of implementation include the following:
Project Main Activities Description
1.Identification of a first cohort of young people through partner CBOs to receive intensive training (3-4) young people from each targeted area.
2. Intensive training of the first cohort of young people in 1) the importance of mental health, including stigmatization attitudes and social exclusion and discrimination against youth with mental illness, and 2) help-seeking behaviors.
3.Intensive training of the first cohort of young people in leadership using YWCA Rise Up! Model and focus on building community-based mental health awareness campaigns
4.Youth-led community consultations to identify major mental health-related issues with an emphasis on youth mental health, using the YWCA Feminist Consultation Methodology
5.Conduct knowledge transfer sessions by cohort one for a second cohort of young people on the importance of mental health by young people from cohort one
6. Develop a fact sheet that identifies major mental health-related issues, that will be updated to a position paper.
7.Conduction of round table discussions and forums to discuss the position paper with the key and relevant decision-makers

Scope of the assignment/ Key responsibilities of the expert:
The expert/trainer is required to offer the following services with an expected Level of Effort 25 working days over the period of the project:
- Conduct 3 days of intensive (Online) training for the first cohort of young people (a group of 15-20 participants) who have been selected to implement the activities within the project, the training will cover two main topics; 1) the importance of mental health, including stigmatization attitudes and social exclusion and discrimination against youth with mental illness, and 2) help-seeking behaviors. And provide a training report that outlines the main outcomes of the training.
- Conduct 3 days of intensive (Online) training for the first cohort of young people in leadership using YWCA Rise Up! Model and focus on building community-based mental health awareness campaigns. Participants in this training will learn about different strategies for raising awareness, including the use of media sources and community outreach. In addition, the training will aim at strengthening the participants' leadership and capacity in training others within their communities, enabling them to become advocates for mental health and lead the charge in creating sustainable change. Also, the trainer will provide a training report that outlines the main outcomes of the training.
- Design and develop a tool kit and guidelines to be disseminated to the young people and will be used later as a reference during the community-led campaigns, followed by providing the needed support and monitoring to the young people in designing and implementing community-led initiatives that aim to promote mental health awareness, and support them in creating media content for the campaign (5 days).
- Conduct coaching for the trained young people to prepare for the community consultation sessions that will be implemented by the trained young people. (1 working day)
- Conduct coaching for the trained young people to address the findings through the conducted community consultation and to draft the fact sheet. (1 working day)
- Develop a fact sheet that identifies major mental health-related issues. (2 working days)
- Provide the needed support and coaching for the trained young people in preparing for the knowledge transfer sessions that will be implemented for a second cohort of young people these sessions will cover the importance of mental health and train the second cohort in help-seeking behaviors and map available mental health and psychosocial support services. (2 working days)
- Provide supervision and needed support to the young people through preparing and conducting verification workshops with key stakeholders to update and develop the fact sheet to a position paper. (4 working days)
- Conduction of round table discussions and forums around youth mental health needs/gaps at the national level with the participation of the decision makers and related parties from the governmental organizations and CBOs. (4 working days)
Key Deliverables:
YWCA will be cooperating with the expert/trainer with the necessary, skills and expertise to conduct the mentioned activities and produce the following main deliverables:
- Training Manual on the importance of mental health and help-seeking behaviors (5 working days)
- Conduct 3 training days on the importance of mental health and help-seeking behaviors.
- Conduct 3 training days on leadership using YWCA Rise Up! Model and how to build community-based mental health awareness campaigns.
- Coaching the trained young people to prepare for the community consultation sessions, address the findings and main planned interventions of the community-led initiatives that will be come up with through the consultation sessions, and draft the fact sheet. (2 working days).
- Provide the needed support and coaching for the trained young people in preparing for the knowledge transfer sessions. (2 working days)
- Supervise conducting the verification workshops by the young people (4 working days)
- Develop a fact sheet that identifies major mental health-related issues. (2 Working days)
- Conduction of round table discussions. (4 working days)
- Final Report in English with recommendations
Qualifications:
- A post-graduate degree in the relevant field, preferably in psychology or sociology
- A minimum of eight (8) years of experience in providing humanitarian response, and psychosocial support.
- Sound knowledge of Community-based Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (CB MHPSS) training methodology
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience in training preferably in the relevant fields.
- Experience in conducting capacity-building training and workshops in the respective field.
- Facilitation skills and preparation of policy papers and position papers.
- High skills in communication and discussion management.
- The ability to write and prepare analytical reports.
