Project: Promoting Access and participation of Students with Disabilities in Higher Education
Responsible to: Project Manager
Duration: 8 months, starting from 1st of December 2013
PROJECT OVERVIEW
QADER for Community Development received a grant from Catholic Relief Services to implement the follow-on project “Promoting Access and participation of Students with Disabilities in Higher Education” in the framework of the Civic Participation Program funded by the United States Agency for International Development.
The project is implemented in partnership with Polytechnic University and Al-Quds University, and in collaboration with Ministry of Higher Education. Main components of the project include:
Promoting awareness and positive attitudes of students and staff towards students with disabilities.
Assessing current policies, procedures, practices at Polytechnic University with respect to students with disabilities.
Developing disability sensitive policies, procedures that promote equitable opportunities for students with disabilities in higher education.
Collaborating with Ministry of Higher Education for assessing the impact of the current legal and policy framework of higher education sector on persons with disabilities.
JOB SUMMARY
The Disability Specialist shall support the project team with technical expertise on disability inclusion in higher education and institutional development of higher education institutions and higher education sector. S/he shall support disability activists among student with disabilities and non-disabilities, and their efforts and contributions to scaling up disability awareness in university campus.
KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Disability Specialist shall undertake the following task and responsibilities:
Conduct workshops for students with disabilities as per the implementation plan.
Facilitate active students workshops for planning and organizing awareness activities.
Provide technical expertise in planning and carrying out awareness campaign.
Collaborate with other project staff and partners universities key staff on facilitation of assessment of policies and procedures at partner universities, preparation disability equality plan, and adoption of sensitive policies and procedures by partner universities’ senior management.
Contribute to designing, and planning, and implementation of awareness activities for universities staff.
Provide technical expertise in a collaborative process for the preparation of awareness guide for universities staff.
Collaborate with other project staff on facilitation of assessment and analysis of the legal and policy framework of higher education sector.
Contribute to designing and preparation of media, promotional materials, and - documentation of the project, including, case studies, press releases and others.
Work closely and in a team spirit, with project field staff to ensure coherence of effort, accountability, timely, and where relevant, joint implementation of Programme implementation;
Support learning environment with project team members and key stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS & CAPABILITIES
Degree in social sciences, Human rights, Disability, or a relation field (Minimum Bachelor Degree )
At least 8 years of proven experience in a related field.
Proven technical capabilities in disability inclusion, social empowerment of PwD, policy analysis, institutional development.
Excellent conceptual and analytical skills and demonstrable ability to think strategically, innovatively and practically to improve work quality.
Excellent communication skill, with proven writing skills in English & Arabic.
Ability to work in a team spirit.
Proficiency in Microsoft Application (Word, Power Point…)
