BACKGROUND

The NRC education program is implemented across Gaza and West Bank MoEHE and UNRWA schools through the ‘Improved Education’ (IE) project. Its overall objective is that children, particularly the most vulnerable, have improved access to a protective, inclusive and enabling educational experience in the protracted conflict context of Palestine in line with the Education for All (EFA) goals, the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the 1 Million Children Learning in Emergency Initiative. The project focus on1) Psycho-educational support: i) training for teachers on how to manage a classroom with children who have gone through stressful and traumatic events; ii) training for counsellors to support students with chronic problems that severely affect their school functioning, including behaviour problems, bed-wetting and sleep disturbances; 2) Teaching and non-teaching school staff capacity building on child-centred teaching & learning approaches; 3) Community involvement establishment and activation of parent associations; 4) Provision of legal awareness to students, parents & teachers and support in the existing framework of the referral system;5) Provision of small capacitation grants to allow target schools to meet gaps in provision of materials, especially improved teaching and learning aids.

The NRC education team composed by 18 members based in Jerusalem and Gaza every year goes though different training packages. This year the interest of the team was to learn to write stories, factsheets, case studies in more attractive ways by using compelling language, pictures and innovative and creative applications to be in a better position to communicate school stories to advocacy colleagues, donors, partners etc.

PROGRESS PLAN

a.2 workshop to be held in Gaza and the West Bank with 8 approximately participants in each venue

b.5-day story-telling and story-writing workshop, drawing on local storytelling traditions and new storytelling games to create an atmosphere for writing. This workshop will include upskilling educators in activities and games they can use to inspire storytelling, and techniques they can use to transfer those stories onto paper. A short illustration workshop will enable stories written in the workshop to be presented as illustrated children’s stories. A simple book-making workshop will follow, enabling educators to create print-ready copies of their stories at minimal cost, using only a printer, scanner, and simple PDF software.

c.The writing of case studies and reports will be incorporated into the last 2 days, asking the educators to use the story-writing process as a spring-board for exercising those skills. The report-writing will enable educators to capacity build and roll out their own programs.
