Fire and Home Safety Training for Transitional Shelter Beneficiaries
Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is an international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States and has been present in the Jerusalem, West Bank, and Gaza (JWBG) since 1961. The CRS JWBG country program currently supports development/relief programs and activities in the sectors of civil society, humanitarian assistance, youth development, education, and peace & justice. In Gaza, CRS’ primary focus is humanitarian assistance.
After the fifty-two days brutal war last year, and as part of CRS’ emergency response, CRS JWBG has constructed more than 230 timber-frame transitional shelters for Internally Displaced (IDPs) families in the rural villages of east Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip.
With the introduction of timber-frame buildings to Gaza, CRS is committed to providing important safety elements to all new transitional shelter owners. CRS’ original shelter plans included a fire extinguisher with every home; however, ongoing evaluations have shown that some fears and uncertainty about fire remains.
Therefore, CRS seeks the services of a consultant to develop home and fire safety training materials and provide home-training sessions to all shelter beneficiaries including all family members with focus on the most vulnerable; i.e. children, seniors, people with disabilities …etc. CRS will also install smoke detectors in all shelters, and will require the consultant to include instructions of set-up and maintenance of smoke detectors in the training package.
