FULL-TIME FACULTY - URBAN STUDIES PROGRAM

Now in its thirteenth year of operation, Al-Quds Bard College for Arts and Sciences (AQB) is an innovative program introducing a liberal arts undergraduate education to the West Bank, with an enrollment of approximately 331 undergraduate and graduate students. AQB’s undergraduate program, taught in English, is rigorous, culminating in a two-semester independent senior project, which, in many fields, is a demanding research paper. The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program requires an equal amount of advanced study in the elected academic discipline (Mathematics, Biology, English, History, or Sciences), and in key education courses that challenge teachers to apply the results of research and pedagogical analysis to the actual work of teaching. Graduates of AQB receive two degrees: a BA or a MAT from Al-Quds University and a BA or MAT from Bard College (New York). 
 
Al-Quds Bard College is seeking candidates to teach in and head its Urban Studies and Spatial Practices (USSP) program beginning in the fall 2022 semester.  USSP offers a distinctive set of course offerings that challenge students to consider their environment and the global environment through the lens of multiple academic disciplines.  Courses include traditional urban studies and planning courses, a generous set of offerings related to the human and natural environment, and interdisciplinary study that touches on AQB’s other specialties in human rights, media, and literature and film.  USSP has a history of deep and sustained engagement with specific Palestinian communities, engaging students in community-based research that engages and benefits our local partners.  Faculty and students in the program are active participants in the Open Society University Network, and so organically connected to peers from campuses around the world.   
 
Our teaching methods are student-centered, involving students in active discussion and group tasks to develop their reading, writing, speaking, production, and critical thinking skills in English. Successful candidates will be flexible problem-solvers capable of engaging texts and fields in which they are not necessarily specialists. The chosen candidate must be prepared to teach students close reading, analytical, and writing skills and the ability to talk intelligently about texts. S/he must also be willing to be engaged in curriculum design as well as collaboration with other faculty members in the Social Science Division curriculum. For the USSP position, we are seeking a scholar committed to interdisciplinary approaches, to the interconnection between theory and practice, and with experience and motivation to build connections between the AQB classroom with partners in Palestine and around the globe. The successful candidate will also have the skills and motivation to teach courses in our text-based Core division, as well as the willingness to teach some courses designed for students who are early in their undergraduate careers and have a lower level of English proficiency. 
 
Full-time faculty teach three courses per semester, supervise a minimum of two senior projects, and are assigned a group of advisees to whom they provide academic guidance throughout the year. Faculty are expected to engage in community service to contribute to the development of AQB. This includes, but is not limited to, participation in academic committees, admissions interviews, moderation boards, faculty development workshops, faculty meetings, and additional administrative tasks, as needed.

Qualifications
Successful candidates will be experienced and invested in interdisciplinary pedagogy, especially the relationship between a liberal arts college’s foundational coursework and its major programs. To that end, we seek faculty members capable of revising and facilitating a flexible, global, and academically rigorous curriculum, one that emphasizes historical context, information literacy, and transferrable analytical, interpretive, and discursive skills. 

• PhD preferred, MA required
• Successful teaching experience in a liberal arts context and in classrooms with English learners
• Enthusiasm for the mission of the College to provide student-centered teaching, foster critical thinking, and incorporate writing throughout the curriculum
• Ability to teach a wide range of topics and commitment to interdisciplinary studies
• Experience with and commitment to building connections between the academy and outside communities
• Fluent in English; ability to speak Arabic is a plus
