Liaison Office Coordinator
The World Council of Churches (WCC) is an ecumenical fellowship of churches founded in 1948. It brings together 350 member churches from all over the world, including Orthodox churches, Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran and Reformed denominations, to promote Christian unity in faith, witness and service for a just and peaceful world.
The WCC looking for a:
Jerusalem Liaison Office Coordinator at 100%
Based in Jerusalem, the successful candidate will work with the Moderator of the Jerusalem Liaison Office Advisory Committee (JLOAC), the Programme Executive for Peacebuilding in the Middle East region (PE Middle East), the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) Coordinator and staff team in Jerusalem, and the WCC Communication Department in Geneva.
The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities:
- Ensure coherence and synergies between the WCC’s Jerusalem-based activities
- Serve as the secretary of the JLOAC. In this role the Jerusalem Liaison Office (JLO) Coordinator will be in permanent consultation and collaboration with the Moderator of the JLOAC, in order to be able to provide timely and regular information, analysis and reports on the local situation from the perspective of the Heads of Churches and Christians in the Holy Land, including:
- Factual reports and stories from churches and local parishes
- Church and other religious statements and positions
- Analytical reports and political papers
- Relate to and work closely with the EAPPI Coordinator in Jerusalem, particularly in providing political analysis and interpretation of the local situation and needs.
- Undertake coordinating responsibilities - with guidance and collaboration of the WCC Programme Executive for peacebuilding in the Middle East region - for the Palestine/Israel Ecumenical Forum (PIEF), and for the World Week of Prayer for Palestine and Israel (WWPPI)
- Working with the JLOAC and other staff, to develop and organize regular study seminars and initiatives in Jerusalem on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the perspective of the local Churches, the WCC and the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) for international Christian audiences/visitors, including guided exposure visits
- In cooperation with the WCC Programme Executive for peacebuilding in the Middle East region, the MECC, and the Action by Churches Together (ACT) Alliance, to help strengthen local church capacity for diaconal work by facilitating international contacts and hosting forums for deliberation and consensus-building
- Help strengthen local ecumenical and interfaith relations, in cooperation with relevant WCC staff and the JLOAC
- Monitor, analyse and interpret trends and developments in the Jerusalem context that are relevant to the ecumenical movement
- Plan, monitor, report and evaluate the work of JLO
- Ensure that key information about the work of JLO is appropriately accessible and properly archived

Qualifications and special requirements:
Education:
University degree or equivalent, preferably in international affairs, social or political
science
Competencies:
- Demonstratable commitment to the ecumenical movement, the MECC and WCC fellowship and knowledge of its history;
- Ability to understand and appreciate churches, ecumenical bodies, groups and movements in their own contexts, especially in light of new trends;
- Knowledge of the different socio-political, cultural and religious contexts in the region;
- Ability to bring churches and other partners into dialogue and build trust;
- Knowledge and experience in planning, monitoring, reporting and evaluating programmes / activities / events;
- Ability to organize programmes, meetings, training courses, etc., with careful reporting and evaluation;
- Ability to prepare and monitor budgets;
- Ability to contribute to the formulation of ecumenical policies, positions and interventions;
- Ability to maintain, nurture and develop existing and new local ecumenical networks;
- Expertise in one or more areas of the WCC Public Witness work;
- Ability to work in a flexible, collaborative and collegial way within a multicultural environment, predominantly in a Middle Eastern context;
- Ability to work independently and yet liaising closely with the Heads of Churches of Jerusalem, and designated staff of the WCC and MECC;
- Ability to participate in and contribute to theological and ethical reflection in ecumenical contexts;
- Ability to travel throughout the region.
Specific skills:
- Demonstrated ecumenical commitment and familiarity with the structured life of the churches and of the ecumenical movement, especially the WCC and the MECC
- Socio-political knowledge of the region, including the role of the churches
- Theological knowledge
- Analytical skills
- Finance: Sound understanding of and capability in budgeting and financial administration and reporting
- Editorial, writing and communication skills
- Computer literacy, and advanced capability with Microsoft Office
- Good command (written and spoken) of the following languages: English, Arabic and Hebrew. French, German or Spanish an asset
- Availability and willingness to travel
