UNRWA’s human development goals

How can you make a difference?
You will be joining a team of around 4,400 staff in the West Bank Field Office working to foster the human development of some 800,000 registered Palestine refugees.
The consultant will be working for 4 weeks, with the objective to draw international awareness on the major protection challenges facing Palestine refugees in the West Bank. The consultant will be tasked to do this through organizing media field tours for journalists working with European Media outlets.
The consultant will be accountable to the Team Leader of the Protection and Neutrality Department during the time of the consultancy. The consultant will be provided with an office space in the West Bank Field Office in Jerusalem during the time of the project.
The main responsibilities include:
In accordance with Agency policy and procedures, the incumbent is to:
- From his/her internal professional network, the consultant will identify and mobilize appropriate locally based journalists (Ramallah, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv) working with European Media outlets to take part to Media field tours;
- The consultant will act as liaison with the Media outlets for all logistics on the field tours;
- S/he will organize together with UNRWA’s Public Information Office (PIO) and the Protection and Neutrality Department (P&N), and take part to 3 media field tours before the end of March 2019. Each field tour aims to have 5 journalists present.
- S/he will be responsible for the organization and preparation of the field tours and act as their focal points for all requests;
- S/he will be responsible for preparation of all background materials for the field briefings for the journalists;
- S/he will be responsible for arrangements for media and/or background interviews with affected beneficiaries, including ensuring translation, obtaining consent.
- He/she will obtain and share the feedbacks from those attending the field-tours through follow-up discussions with the attending journalists.
- At the end of the project, the consultant will produce in English:
- A short report: documenting the field visits, providing an analysis of the feedback obtained, lessons learned, recommendations for future media work;
- A complete contact list of media contacts who participated, those expressed interest but were unable to participate, and suggested additional media contacts.
- A media report – in written English prose and by video - for UNRWA’s use on the use of force and highlighting at least one of the beneficiary cases interviewed in the briefings.
The incumbent will be given guidance and support in the following areas:
- Selection of the locations for the media field tours; these will likely be in refugee camps (e.g. Dheisheh, Arroub, Jalazone, etc.).
- Identification of beneficiaries for the interviews.
- UNRWA field staff to assist tours and meeting with beneficiaries.
- Possible logistical support with a bus / van and a driver to transport the journalists and the consultant to the field tours’ locations.
- Distribution of ethical guidelines for interacting with beneficiaries to all attending journalists.
- Background information to be used in materials provided to journalists.
Conditions of service
Gross Monthly Salary USD2,500.00.
ISP’s are fully responsible, at their expense, for insurance covering the period of their services with the agency.
Additional information
Ability to travel in all West Bank areas including East Jerusalem.

To qualify for this position, you will need:
Education
Degree from an accredited educational institution in journalism, political science, human rights or a related field.
Work experience
Three years of relevant work experience in media and journalism.
Work experience in the West Bank including East Jerusalem.
Language(s)
Excellent command of written and spoken Arabic and English.
Equivalency:
Candidates with an equivalent combination of relevant academic qualifications, professional training and progressive work experience may also be considered.
You will also need to demonstrate the following competencies:
- Strong network with existing locally based journalists (Ramallah, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv) working with European media outlets.
- Proven commitment to human rights and refugee issues.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated organizational skills.
- Knowledge of communication strategies and techniques.
- Able to work independently.
- Strong computer skills: must be competent in the use of Windows, MS office programs (Word, Excel), email programs.
