Microsoft Software Engineer - Gaza Sky Geeks Business Lab

PROGRAM/DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:
Gaza Sky Geeks is Gaza’s startup accelerator and vibrant co-working hub, run by Mercy Corps and founded with an initial grant from Google.org in 2011. Gaza Sky Geeks aims to transform Gaza’s most talented youth into the Middle East’s business leaders and realize Gaza’s potential as a startup hub. Our new “Gaza Sky Geeks Business Lab” will hire talented Gazan software engineers and product managers to develop software for enterprise clients.

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY
As a software engineer or product manager for our first Gaza Sky Geeks Business Lab, you will receive:

-A good salary for 5 months with strong potential for longer-term employment.
-The Contractor is not a Mercy Corps employee and will not be entitled to any benefits or compensations outside of the rate that will  specified for this service.
-Training on how to launch products that meet the needs of “enterprise clients” (big businesses). Training on technical and soft skills.
-The opportunity to work for an important client. The client will be a large company in the Arab world interested in Microsoft technologies.
-The opportunity to meet with the client on-site (e.g., in Morocco) (if you receive a permit and visa). Gaza Sky Geeks / Mercy Corps will manage the permit and visa application process and cover the trip costs.

Your responsibility will be to:

-Within five months, launch a Minimum Viable Product (“MVP”).
-If the client relationship develops positively, found your own company and continue building products for that client (and more clients). You will essentially be launching a software consultancy/contracting company.
-Learn quickly and be as proactive and professional. This is a real business opportunity and needs to be treated as such.
-Work professionally and collaboratively with your teammates and manager.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Software Development
-Develop high-quality software in a short time frame, according to the product/client needs.
-Collaborate with other software developers effectively (e.g., use source control)

Product Management
-One software developer will be asked to step into the role of product manager. This person will manage the client relationship, understand his/her needs, and make product development decisions accordingly. This person will also manage the other developers.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
-BA/S or equivalent required. Work experience preferred.
-Excellent English.
-Fast learner, curious.
-Preferred technical experience (not required): NodeJS, JavaScript language (not just using things like jQuery), C or C++
