Sounds of Palestine is a community music program that is inspired and based on the concept of El Sistema in Venezuela and that combines music and social work in order to develop the social and emotional skills of underprivileged children. It is active in the area of Bethlehem since 2012 and is implemented by a registered Foreign Association Branch of a Swiss Organization. We run a kindergarten program and an afterschool program and most of the participating children live in refugee camps. In the afterschool program the children receive instrument lessons, orchestra, choir, music theory and art lessons. Group teaching and orchestra playing are the main pillars, offering the children a safe space to practice and develop skills needed for a successful and healthy community.

We are looking for a Musical Leader

The post holder reports to the Senior Program Manager and has overall responsibility for the Music Department. 

Main responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Teach instrument group lessons and conduct orchestras 
  • Supervise and advise music teachers with regard to didactic, pedagogic, and musical skills
  • Provide educational material and repertoire incl. writing arrangements
  • Personnel responsibility for music teachers including effective staff leading and staff development
  • Create teaching schedules
  • Communicate with the families of the children
  • Take care of the instrument stock and the instruments
  • Plan and organize concerts and other performances
  • Networking with other community music programs

Job Requirements

Knowledge, skills, and abilities of the ideal candidate:

  • Minimum a Batchelor degree or comparable in music or music education or some related field
  • Knowledge of El Sistema Movement and related teaching methods is a plus
  • Good playing and performing skills with at least one musical instrument
  • Experience in teaching incl. didactic and pedagogic background
  • Profound knowledge of music theory
  • Experience in working with children and teenagers
  • Experience in choosing repertoire for ensembles of different levels
  • Very good skills in arranging pieces of music for different instrumentations and of different styles (Arabic, Western, world music, modern as well as classic)
  • Experience in conducting ensembles and orchestras
  • Experience in leadership
  • Good social and communication skills incl. nonviolent communication
  • Experience in intercultural environment
  • Passion for the development of a future-oriented program including leading a committed and responsible team
  • MS Office skills
  • Native language Arabic with very good English skills in writing and verbal
