Title of post: Postdoctoral researcher

Location: Birzeit University

Reports to: Project Manager

Contract type: Consultancy Based contract- full time (12 months, to be renewed)

Please note that the Postdoctoral position is on daily basis and requires full time commitment.

Overall Purpose of the job

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral researcher, starting 7th November, to conduct a specified programme of research.

Birzeit University and the University of Limerick (Ireland) have secured external funding to conduct the Learning in Motion project. The project examines how gender responsive, play-based learning pedagogies can be embedded in teacher education programmes in Palestine. During this three year project, the project team will explore how research-informed pedagogies can be incorporated into teacher education policy and practice to enhance the educational experience of children in Palestine.

Specific objectives of the project are to are to (1) identify, assess and evaluate the barriers and enablers for changes to teacher education practice, (2) use a “train the trainer” continuing professional development (CPD) programme to upskill teacher educators in gender responsive play-based learning pedagogies, and (3) examine the reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation and maintenance (“RE-AIM”) of the teacher education CPD programme.

This project is funded by the Irish Research Council and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Ireland).

Expected Deliverables

Work with the project manager and the project team to conduct a specified programme of research. This will entail use of both quantitative and qualitative research methods, literature reviews and programme evaluation.
Liaise with both internal and external project stakeholders in Palestine and Ireland.
Contribute to the project’s research output by publishing in high quality journals, and presenting research at national and/or international conferences.
Perform research collaboratively and individually.
Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required to develop research skills and competencies.
Carry out administrative work to support the programme of research and any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Job Requirements

Essential knowledge/experience/skills

Doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant area, e.g. education, social sciences (or near completion, please give date of Viva).

Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written Arabic and English (please provide evidence/ sample of academic/ research writing in English).
Experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods.

Proficiency in the use of ICT, demonstrating these skills effectively in report writing, communicating and presenting information

Evidence of publication in peer-reviewed journals and/or presentation of work at national or international conferences.

Desirable Criteria:

Knowledge of the research, theory and practice of education, including teacher education.

Experience in conducting research in teacher education and professional development.

A track record of conducting individual and/or collaborative research projects with a variety of research partners.
Evidence of working with stakeholders at the local, national or international level in research or programme development/evaluation.
Demonstrate a capacity to work independently and within a project team to achieve results.
Demonstrate a record of success in project management.

An ability to foster and sustain academic relationships internally and externally
Attention to detail and thoroughness in work practices and an ability to work to deadlines
Highly motivated with excellent organisational skills
