Psychologist Trainer

Job Description

YES Theatre for Communication among Youth:
A training program in the psychosocial well-being interventions with Children

Project Title: Child detention

1-Background and Rationale

The proposed project is unique in that it gathers the energy and commitment of a group of partner organizations in the Hebron Governorate to foster the professional dialogue dynamics necessary for improving the psychosocial well being and mental health of Palestinian children who have just been released from detention in Israeli prisons. Administrative detention or detention without charge or trial for periods of 3 months which may be renewed indefinitely is a major source of trauma for both the detainees and the community as a whole. As of May 2014 there were 196 child prisoners with 27 under the age of 161 in Israeli prisons where they are also denied family visits.

The proposed intervention addresses the trauma suffered by the detainees and their families and communities by working with an array of activities based on theatre and drama aimed at promoting healthy psychosocial development; providing additional tools to community workers, support of early learning and providing much needed recreational activities to ex-detainees, their families and the whole community.

The primary target group of these activities are the children and youth (male and female) who have just been released from detention in Israel, and by extension; parents, psychologists, social workers, teachers. The project partners and main stakeholders coordinating to make this possible include; the Palestinian Ministry of Detainees and Ex-Detainees, the Prisoners Club, the Palestinian Ministry of Education, UNRWA and CBOs active in providing services for the project main target group. The proposed project targets all main residential centers across the Hebron Governorate. The indirect or final beneficiaries of this project include the public at large, children and youth (males and females ages 12-45), public institutions and CBOs.

The overall objective: “Contributing to the improvement of psychosocial well-being of Palestinian children (ex-detainees) and enabling them to pursue or resume a healthy life through the medium of theatre to address social and development issues”- is the long-term development effort or impact of the project, and contributes to setting the features of a strong and modern society. Yes Theatre and its partners will exert a consolidated effort throughout the project duration (two years) to respond to immediate community needs with a special focus on the mental health’s needs of the project’s direct target groups and final beneficiaries. This is aligned with the development goals and interventions of most Palestinian institutions. The project will immediately impact Palestinian children and youth (ex-detainees) as the direct target groups by providing them with care and services to improve their psychosocial well-being and mental health situation through the use of theatre and drama. In addition, the project will positively impact the work of a group of Drama teacher, by providing them with a specialized training program in drama therapy.

The specific objective of the project will be met through the involvement of numerous groups from the Palestinian society with a particular emphasis on youth and children (ex-detainees/ ages 12-18) who are in a very sensitive transitional phase resulting from their experiences of the detention in Israel. These groups will be actively involved in innovative forms of artistic expression, and active learning processes in theatre. Through this engagement, they will exercise their main rights as human beings; build awareness to their rights, self-confidence and esteem. Other target groups include professionals in the sector, NGOs active in mental health and their management and technical staff. It is worth mentioning that Yes Theatre and its partners agreed on using theatre as a main tool to develop a better communication strategy that aimed at sensitizing the local and international communities to the main psychosocial problems that resulted for Palestinian children in general with a special focus on detainees and ex-detainees.
The project is designed to take place over two years. To achieve the specific objective and consequently to contribute to achieving the overall objective, three results are proposed which illustrate engagement at various levels with the direct target groups, and the resulting benefits accruing long term for the indirect target groups. These results will be achieved through implementing clustered sets of activities. For each result, measurable indicators have been developed to measure accomplishments. Means of verification are defined to guide monitoring and assessment of accomplishment.

The three action results are:

R1: Capacities of professionals from Yes Theatre are strengthened in facilitating and monitoring comprehensive psychosocial and cognitive support for ex-detained children.
Main activities: A capacity building program will be build for Yes Theatre’s drama teachers by a specialist in psychology / dramatherapy.

R2 Children and parents’ self-confidence, trust are improved.
Main activities: Plays and drama workshops will be organized for ex-detainees children and their parents

R3 The impact of the problem of child detention is decreased due to the mobilization of the local and international community.
Main activities: Plays will be performed by ex-detainees children and professionals for the local community and main stakeholders.

Yes Theatre in cooperation with CSSR (Centrale Sanitaire Suisse Romande) developed the strategies, activities and outputs for all four results collectively. Therefore, the results, strategies and activities in this action, targeting and affecting various groups, are closely interrelated and overlap.

For more information on the project and/or to see the project’s document, please contact Yes Theatre and the CSSR.
