Public Health Specialist - Surveillance systems
The Palestinian Authority is establishing a Palestinian National Institute of Public Health (PNIPH). The World Health Organization (WHO) has been given the task of setting up the PNIPH, in close cooperation with the Palestinian Ministry of Health, Palestinian universities, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, and other stakeholders. The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is funding the project.
The aim is to establish the PNIPH by 2014 as a semi-autonomous legal entity under the umbrella of the Palestinian Authority, fully accountable for its professional and technical responsibilities, budget, and staff. The Institute will have a governing board with representatives from key stakeholders and will be able to speak out and publish reports and commentaries on health issues.
The WHO office for West Bank and Gaza is recruiting a national project team to start the work of establishing the Institute and build up its initial core functions. We are currently recruiting a Public Health Specialist - Surveillance systems. A brief description of this post can be found below, the full description can be found on www.emro.who.int/palestine.
Purpose of the Post
To strengthen public health surveillance systems and registries and to improve utilisation of health data order to provide advice to policy makers.
Description of duties
The incumbent will perform the following duties:
-Contribute in the team that works on describing, assessing, improving and developing public health surveillance systems and registries.
-Analyse, interpret and present available public health information.
-In close collaboration with Palestinian Health Information Centre and other stakeholders, elaborate on the results presented in the annual report in prioritised areas.
-Participate in the development of the core functions of the Institute, providing technical guidance and support and high quality outputs.
-Perform research and tutor others on public health issues.
-Initiate the further development of public health functions at the Institute.
Education
-Masters Degree in public health or epidemiology or health statistics or related field
Experience
-At least 7 years of work experience combined at national and/or international level in the field of public health
-Extensive experience in working with national or other large-scale health registries and databases
-Experience in analysing, interpreting and presenting public health data
Languages
Fluency in English and Arabic
