TERMS OF REFERENCE

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to a population of some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip to achieve their full potential in human development, pending a just solution to their plight. UNRWA’s services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance and emergency assistance. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions.

Publications and Branding Coordinator, East Jerusalem


BACKGROUND
UNRWA’s communications division HQ acts as the executive for all Agency-wide communications. The division directs and is responsible for the entirety of UNRWA’s public relations at a global and regional level.
A confident writer and editor with real attention to detail, you will ensure UNRWA’s printed and online publications are high-quality, relevant and on-brand. You must have an excellent understanding of what makes good copy, as well as a working knowledge of both print publishing and branding.

Description of Duties and Responsibilities
-Research, write and edit UNRWA printed materials, including brochures, fact sheets, maps, calendars, post cards, posters, etc) in collaboration with designers, UNRWA staff;
-Write and edit press releases and maintain contact lists, in collaboration with the Chief of Communications;
-Update and maintain on-line filing system of all electronic formats of UNRWA publications;
-Act as key editor in support of UNRWA campaigns and for day-to-day copy, including human interest stories and other web copy (shared task);
-Supervise design, layout and printing of all materials, either in-house or with a professional design company, as appropriate;
-Provide support (e.g. branding advice, style guide) to UNRWA staff including headquarters departments, representative offices and national committees in Spain, Italy and the US;
-Develop branded templates (in Word) for internal communications, making these available to all UNRWA staff;
-Research, write and edit UNRWA’s official Communications Guidelines, which include branding guidelines, Englishlanguage style guide, social media guidelines, approvals policies, etc;
-Support UNRWA’s social media presence, act as back-up web and social media content editor (shared task).

Essential Qualificat ions and Experience:
-A university degree (BA minimum) or equivalent work experience;
-Mother-tongue level written and spoken English;
-Excellent copy-editing skills and meticulous attention to detail;
-Extensive proven experience of writing for a range of audiences;
-Experience in producing publications from editing to print stage;
-Working knowledge of publishing software (eg Adobe Indesign);
-Demonstrable knowledge of branding best practice;
-Strong all-round computer skills.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
-Experience of producing communications guidelines;
-Experience maintaining websites and solid understanding of social media;
-Knowledge of Arabic and/or other official UN languages an asset.

Competencies:
-Strong organisational skills (ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks);
-Highly motivated, comfortable taking initiative and able to work with minimum supervision;
-Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral;
-Proven ability to work in a multi-cultural setting;
-Displays good judgment to political and cultural sensitivities.

CONDITIONS OF SERVICE:
-The position is for one year, salary negotiable, with a start date of 01 April 2013, extendable subject to initial three-month probationary period.
