Job Description
BBC Media Action (formerly the BBC World Service Trust) invites applications for the following posts based in Ramallah:
Researcher
To work with the Senior Research Officer to design, coordinate and conduct a variety of qualitative and quantitative research activities which will inform, guide and evaluate project activities through key audience and media insights.
Formative audience research will inform the content of the debates by identifying the major concerns of the audience and investigating priority topics for the audience. Research will also monitor audience reaction to the programme output. In addition, audience research activities will guide the development of programme marketing and assess its effectiveness through pre-testing.
Content analysis and monitoring of social networking sites will be used to monitor audience response and engagement with programming.
Research will also be undertaken to assess the impact of capacity building within PBC.
Main Duties:
Input into the overall design of research.
Input to a range of research activities including design of questionnaires, sampling frame, data collection, training and oversight of field researchers and focus group facilitators and analysis and reporting.
Input into design of discussion guides for focus groups with citizens and in-depth interviews with decision makers to inform and evaluate debates and voter education campaigns.
Design and administration of evaluations for media capacity building activities.
Work with the SRO to support the management of the collection of all research data – including monitoring data, transcripts and translations of focus groups and interviews.
Analysis of data and help present and disseminate research findings to partner organizations and donors.
Writing reports on research activities and other topics as requested by BBC
Media Action’s Research and Learning group
Travel throughout West Bank and other areas in the region when necessary and as possible.
Abide by all BBC health and safety regulations.
Abide by all BBC World Service Trust financial reporting procedures.
Perform other duties as required in the establishment and management of the Project.
Required knowledge, skills and experience:
Fluency in spoken and written English and Arabic.
Demonstrated strong qualitative research experience (including moderating focus groups and interviews, analyzing and interpreting of data)
Demonstrated strong quantitative research experience (including analysis of datasets using one of the mainstream statistical packages (SPSS or other))
Experience of supervising the implementation of research activities of other researchers
Attention to detail and the ability to work speedily and accurately under pressure.
Excellent organisational and administrative skills to prioritise work, meet deadlines and respond flexibly to rapidly changing priorities.
Ability to maintain relationships with partner organizations.
Ability to communicate clearly and appropriately to colleagues, to research participants and to managers.
Ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues and work as a member of a team, demonstrating good interpersonal skills.
Enthusiasm to mentor and train colleagues.
Good IT skills, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
In-depth working knowledge of the culture, media environment and politics of the Palestinian Territories.
Self-motivated and willing to learn on own initiative when opportunity allows.
Ability to apply a flexible approach to work.
Ability to operate effectively in a difficult environment
