Job Description

The International Legal Foundation (ILF) is seeking a Social Worker to join our local Palestinian team and work with a committed and diverse global organization. This position provides an opportunity to be a member of an enthusiastic and diverse team that is committed to continually advancing local leadership, ownership, and decision-making.

Established in 2001, ILF is a leading global advocate for the right to counsel. Our mission is to make justice a reality for poor people by fighting to guarantee high-quality legal representation for everyone arrested or detained. Around the world, we provide criminal defense services and build sustainable, effective legal aid institutions.

Headquartered in New York City, ILF has legal aid programs operating in Afghanistan, the Republic of Georgia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal, Palestine, and Tunisia. To date, ILF lawyers have represented more than 80,000 people suspected or accused of criminal offenses and trained thousands of legal aid lawyers to provide quality legal aid services. ILF also performs high-level advocacy, pushing countries, international institutions, and donors to prioritize legal aid as a fundamental human right and a crucial global development issue. Our work prevents torture and mistreatment, promotes alternatives to detention, and builds fair and effective justice systems.

Since 2010, ILF has been providing quality legal aid across 11 governorates in the West Bank and advocating to strengthen legal aid for all Palestinians.

About this Role

The social worker's role is to help provide legal assistance to the organization's clients by coordinating and supporting their social service needs. This involves assessing client needs, finding available resources, and connecting with service providers. The social worker ensures that clients are voluntarily and well-informed when referred to social services. They also follow up on the success of these referrals and build ongoing relationships with clients.

The social worker stays in regular contact with clients and their attorneys through in-person meetings, reminders, and updates. Additionally, they maintain connections with stakeholders and community service providers. The social worker contributes to the Foundation's advocacy efforts, aiming to enhance social services for individuals in conflict with the law. This includes promoting mediation, diversion, alternatives to detention, and effective integration into society.
