Back Ground
NRC works internationally in the field of education and intends to establish a new project to support UNRWA and Waqf schools in East Jerusalem. Following joint assessments/need analysis with service providers, NRC will engage with in-service teacher-training; parental skills, communication between schools and parents and teaching and learning aids with a focus on learning difficulties, community involvement and basic skills
Job Purpose:
The Teacher Support Officer is responsible for carrying out all activities and liaison with their designated schools, including students, teachers, school management and school community. The main focus of the position is to assess and respond to teachers’ needs in the designated schools.
This role requires a flexible approach to work timing. Where necessary it will require that the TSO works outside of the normal hours.
This job description has been reworked in consultation with staff, according to the needs of the project in Jan 2011.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
-Minimum of three years teacher education experience (grades 1-3 in particular), including familiarity with different pedagogical approaches and experiential teaching and learning.
-Experience of working with or within the UNRWA and or Waqf system
-Facilitation skills
-Experience of needs assessment, mentoring and support
-Experience of and commitment to participatory approaches to aid and development
-Commitment to the ideals of NRC including Education for All child protection, inclusion and gender equality
-Ability to plan, organise and manage own time
-Communication skills in Arabic and English
-Computer literacy
-Flexibility and creativity
-Strong team working skills
Desirable
-Experience in non-formal education
-Experience of working with action research
-Experience of youth work and/or school management
-Experience of community mobilisation and working through volunteers
-Experience with monitoring and evaluation including data collection

Contract period: 12 months, with possible extension
