Post Title: Public Information Officer
Duty Station: Ramallah
Type of contract: Service Contract
Duration: 6 months with possibility of extension
Description of functions
Under the guidance and supervision of the Head of Office or his/her delegate, the incumbent will be responsible for assisting in the implementation of all activities related to OHCHR-oPt project for human rights promotion and protection. The incumbent will be primarily responsible for:
-Liaising with national and international media in all three relevant languages (Arabic, English, and Hebrew) to promote OHCHR-oPt activities and statements.
-Formulate a communication and public information OHCHR-OPT strategy for effective human rights promotion and outreach, with emphasis on violations in the OPT by whomever they occur.
-Creating and maintaining the OHCHR-OPT website. Ensuring that activities of the office work, including the office’s public reports, is presented to the media and wider public in an effective and timely manner.
-Assisting in drafting weekly, monthly and annual OHCHR.OPT reports, including the Office’s contribution to other relevant UN reports.
-Drafting and disseminating material for publication, including press releases, opeds, and feature human rights stories and other relevant publications.
-Arranging press conferences, press briefings, and other Office activities as appropriate. Contributing to approaches towards radio and television programmes, new media and other advocacy channels.
-Within limits of delegated authority, represent the Office at meetings of the UN Country Team Communications Group, the Humanitarian Country Team Advocacy Working Group, and other advocacy related bodies. Contribute to the mainstreaming of human rights within the overall UN approach in OPT.
-Assisting in media coverage to visits by independent human rights experts and OHCHR missions, including media for such visits.
-Monitor the local and international relevant media from a human rights perspective, particularly in relation to the OPT.
-Liaising with counterparts in other UN and civil society organisations.
-Integrating fully gender perspective into all its activities.
-Additional tasks as required.
Qualifications
Education:
Advanced University degree, preferably in public or media relations, communications, journalism studies, international relations, or other disciplines related to either media relations or human rights. A combination of relevant academic qualifications and extensive relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:
Minimum four years of progressively responsible related work experience (e.g. journalism, media liaison, public relations). Prior working experience in the United Nations or other international organization. Prior experience in human rights work is an asset.
Languages:
Arabic, English, and Hebrew (written and spoken).
Other essential qualifications:
Experience of and capacity to work in a team within a multicultural environment, and ability to work under pressure. Ability to communicate well. Commitment to UN core competencies, and to the highest standards of professionalism and integrity. Enthusiasm, initiative and creativity are also essential
Computer skills:
Good command of operational systems and office applications (Microsoft Word, Excel etc).
