UNRWA is the United Nations agency responsible for the protection, care and human development of a population of some 4.6 million Palestine refugees living in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and the Syrian Arab Republic. The Agency is committed to assisting Palestine refugees in maintaining a decent standard of living, acquiring appropriate knowledge and skills, enjoying the fullest possible extent of human rights, and leading a long and healthy life. UNRWA is by far the largest UN operation in the Middle East with over 29,000 staff. Most of the staff members are refugees themselves, working directly to benefit their communities – as teachers, doctors, nurses or social workers.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
In accordance with Agency policy and procedures, the ideal candidate:
-Repairs and maintains vehicle and motor transport equipment operated by the Agency.
-Assists the Head Mechanic in :
-determining the repairs required and the parts to be replaced;
-reporting abnormal war or damage discovered in vehicles inspected or repaired;
-inspecting and testing vehicles and equipment;
-technical training of Motor Transport staff.
-May replace the Head Mechanic during the latter's absence.
-May be required to drive an Agency vehicle in the course of duty.
-Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES
-Successful completion of full preparatory education.
-Successful completion of a full time course of at least two years duration in automotive repair.
-Three years satisfactory practical experience in automotive repairs covering petrol and/or diesel engines, using modern garage tools and equipment.
-Experience in using workshop manuals and spare parts catalogues.
-Good knowledge of Arabic and English.
-Possession of a driving license valid in the country of duty station covering all types of vehicles operated by the Agency.
-Passing a trade test conducted by the Vehicle Maintenance Officer.

2 CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
-Basic Salary: Monthly basic salary $607.80; plus monthly dependency allowance up to $123.25
-Contract Duration: Three years including 1 year probation period.
-Leave: 30 days annual leave
-Pension: Provident Fund contribution
-Other conditions of service and benefits may apply.
EQUIVALENCY
Any combination of training and experience accepted as equivalent by the Director of Administration and Human Resources and the Comptroller may be substituted for all or part of the above requirements.

With their prior agreement, candidates who are approved as suitable for appointment but are not the selected candidate for this vacancy, will be placed on the Agency’s roster of pre-approved candidates for a period of up to one year, and may be considered for future vacancies in the same position.
The Agency maintains the discretion to fill future vacancies for this position from the roster without readvertising the vacancy.
