About this Position:
The Web Marketing and Communications Officer is responsible for upgrading the content and use of the functionality of the Bethlehem University website, working in collaboration with Web Content Authors to ensure that the website and its related databases promote the accomplishments and impact and also enhance the mission of Bethlehem University. Thus, the person in this position works closely with faculty and staff who are Web Content Authors, the Web Services and Raiser’s Edge Database Officer, and the Advancement Office staff.
The Web Marketing and Communications Officer is responsible for:
Leading, training, and supporting the Web Content Authors in writing material for the website that is engaging, up-to-date, and meets the University’s need and desire to communicate with both the local and international public;
Writing, implementing, and updating the Web Procedures for the University in coordination with the Web Content Authors, Web Committee, and others;
Designing and disseminating the University E-Mail Updates and Newsletters in cooperation with the DC office.
Ensuring that the Homepage is engaging, up-to-date, and meets the University’s need and desire to communicate with both the local and international public
Some of the responsibilities of this position
are similar to the content and design aspects that are often associated with a “webmaster” and
are similar to the writing aspects that are often associated with a “public relations officer.”
The technical aspects that form the foundation of the website (BBNC platform from the Blackbaud Company) are more of the responsibility of another staff colleague, the Web Services and Raiser’s Edge Officer. The Web Marketing and Communications Officer works with these staff as well as with the Web Content Authors and Advancement Office staff, assisting them in their work.
The Bethlehem University website is built on the Blackbaud NetCommunity (BBNC) platform and it is integrated with the Bethlehem University alumni, donor and grant management database known as Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge. Each department of the University has a Website Content Author for whom the Officer provides training, support, and assistance. The Officer also provides training, support, and assistance to the Advancement Office staff and to the Event Management staff to assist them in using the website functionality for their work.
The Officer assists the Advancement Office staff in designing and implementing new electronic communications vehicles. The Officer designs and implements web procedures and tools to be used by the Website Content Authors and the Advancement Office staff as the University enhances its local, regional, and global presence on the web in English, Arabic, and German. The Officer also works closely with the Web Services and Raiser’s Edge Database Officer and the Computer Center staff to ensure that integration between the Raiser’s Edge and the BBNC Website databases are accurate and functional.
Primary Responsibilities:
Lead, train and support the Web Content Authors in writing material for the website that is engaging, up-to-date, and meets the University’s need and desire to communicate with both the local and international public;
Review written material from Web Content Authors and assist them in editing content in keeping with the Style Guide (also ensuring that grammar and spelling is accurate and that content is engaging and effectively promotes the University among the local and international audiences).
Serve as content editor of the Website, in both Arabic and English languages to ensure informative, engaging and correct content.
Write, implement, and update the Web Procedures for the University in coordination with the Web Content Authors, Web Committee, and others;
Together with the Web Content Authors and Web Committee, design and implement an annual Webpage Audit system for each department and faculty that ensures up-to-date material, offers suggested modifications of text and photos to enhance the engaging and persuasive effect of the Webpages.
Establish policies and systems to ensure that online content is appropriate for University use, organized using sets, tags, descriptions, etc., and does not violate copyright laws.
Publish and update an on-line Web Style Guide
Engage and work with the Web Committee to ensure that Website meets the needs of the University
Design and disseminate the University E-Mail Updates and Newsletters
Assist Advancement staff and others in creating appealing, tasteful, and engaging graphics for electronic use, and format electronic newsletters (e.g., BU Happenings, Alumni News, Library Updates, Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, etc) – and assist the Web Services and Raiser’s Edge Database Officer in distributing electronic newsletters to the desired recipients using BBNC and Raiser’s Edge settings and queries.
Ensure that the Homepage is engaging, up-to-date, and meets the University’s need and desire to communicate with both the local and international public
Write articles and format text and images on the Homepage to ensure that the University and its accomplishments are promoted locally and internationally
Work closely with Development staff to ensure that current messaging of donor outreach is consistent with our online messaging (and vice versa). Use communications best practices and exceptional writing abilities to produce the most effective copy possible.
Monitor, publish, disseminate, and analyze web statistics, using analytics to create and implement creative marketing strategies to increase web traffic and maximize the online presence of the University.
Ensure a cohesive and integrated online presence among all online portals, e.g., the website, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, etc.
Keep informed about and implement industry-wide best practices for online marketing and communications.
Secondary Responsibilities:
Serve on the Web Committee.
Develop close working relationship through regular meetings with the Computer Center, Web Content Authors, Web Committee, and Advancement Office staff.
Conduct trainings for BBNC with new users at least once each semester and otherwise as appropriate and requested.
Maintain up-to-date BBNC process and procedure documents and publish for easy access by Web Content Authors, Advancement Office and Computer Center staff.
Conduct regular (at least 2 times per month) Skype and/or telephone meetings with North American office staff
With the Web Committee, implement a strategic action plan with metrics, and proactively seek out opportunities for enhancement and promotion of Bethlehem University through the website.
Special Working Conditions:
Availability via mobile phone, Skype, and email beyond regular work hours is required due to the multiple-hour time difference between Bethlehem, Palestine and Washington, DC. Flexibility in working hours is required so that meetings between both locations can happen in a timely manner.
For instance, the Officer must be able to work until 5 pm at least three days per week and occasionally later as needed and requested.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will possess the following skills, qualifications, and attributes:
Minimum of five years of experience of writing content for various types of publications, e-communications, designing for web, and complex project management;
Knowledge of marketing principles and practices as normally acquired through a Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or other related field of study;
Demonstrated success in developing plans and executing web strategies. Track record as a creative and strategic thinker;
Experience with online marketing that engages, motivates, and drives readers to action;
Working knowledge of copywriting and editing principles associated with the production of promotional pieces. Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills required;
Must be able to effectively lead, communicate and collaborate with diverse constituencies with varying levels of technical knowledge; must possess effective analytical, interpersonal, organizational, team-building, and team-leading skills;
Strong oral and written communication skills in English is required and in Arabic is desired
Significant successful experience in higher education or multi-disciplinary non-profit organizations, and capacity to maintain poise and work effectively under pressure;
The ability to work successfully on multiple time-sensitive projects across time zone differences and with persons of different cultures; and the ability to quickly adapt to and exercise leadership in different cultures and with different business practices;
Experience with website content management systems; experience with Blackbaud NetCommunity and Raiser’s Edge highly desired; familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and understanding of HTML and CSS desired.

Please note that the Web Services and Raiser’s Edge Officer is responsible for:
knowing about the technical components of the BBNC website functions and of the Raiser’s Edge database,
providing technical service, support, and training to the Website Content Authors, Communications Office staff, and others in the Advancement Office,
ensuring that the Raiser’s Edge data and the BBNC Website technical links are accurate and functioning, and
liaising with Blackbaud and the Computer Center on all technical aspects of the website and the Rasier’s Edge database.
