Background & Introduction:
The Palestinian Farmers’ Union (PFU) is a broadly recognized Palestinian farmers’ network, with active Governorate Farmers’ Associations (GFAs) members that represent farmers of all agricultural sectors and communities to defend their rights, and interests, to achieve a more securing and enabling policy, business environment, and provides quality services to strengthen farmers’ skills to better produce, process and market their commodities, to better cope with shocks and changes.
In partnership with Oxfam, the Palestinian Farmers’ Union (PFU) is implementing a program funded by Directorate-General for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid (DGD) titled “Women, youth and other SSPs increase benefits in the fresh vegetable value chain as change agents” with 3 partners: Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committee (PARC), Rural Women Development Society (RWDS) and Palestinian Farmers’ Union (PFU) to make the fresh vegetable value chain more inclusive, fair and sustainable.
CONTEXT
Domestically, the central market is the main player in the vegetable value chain. They determine local prices and consequently the profits farmers can make which are directly linked to the central market price.
Farmers’ current practice of selling agricultural produce in the central markets in Palestine using cartoon boxes poses challenges related to pricing, transparency, fairness, and quality assurance. Introducing the use of weighed boxes in selling agricultural produce, offers numerous advantages such as accurate pricing, improved customer satisfaction, and enhanced market reputation.
PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT
To develop a position paper that aims to advocate for the adoption of cartoon boxes by farmers when selling agricultural produce in the central markets of Palestine. It should present a comprehensive analysis of the benefits associated with using weighted boxes and provides recommendations for farmers, farmer associations, cooperatives, and central market authorities to facilitate a smooth transition.Top of FormBottom of Form
Objectives:
- Diagnose the current situation of boxes used in the central market and its disadvantages to the farmers for women and Men farmers.
- Identify the advantages and benefits for women and Men farmers for using cartoon boxes in the central market.
- Analyze and evaluate the impact of using cartoon boxes on the markets and farmers’ operations, including efficiency, productivity, and income.
- Provide recommendations for optimizing the use of cartoon boxes in the central market, taking into consideration the identified advantages in terms of pricing and its impacts.
