Bilateral Relations
The British Consulate-General in Jerusalem (BCG) is seeking an individual for the position of part-time Bilateral Relations (3 days/week) starting in late July/August 2013.
Purpose of the job: The successful applicant will drive forward Palestinian/ British relations. You will identify opportunities for productive links between peoples and institutions that contribute to the Palestinian statebuilding effort – then make them happen.
Duties and responsibilities:
-Improve ties between Palestinians and UK institutions in fields such as health, law, local government and universities (including scholarships)
-Share best practice with Palestinian people, including twinning associations, trades unions and chambers of commerce, linking them to UK counterparts
-Prioritise sectors for engagement with colleagues in the BCG, British Council and Department for International Development - for example health and justice
-Create a strategy setting out:
-What types of partnerships you believe are most effective
-How the resources at your disposal will be deployed most effectively
-How to evaluate the success of your chosen strategy
-Work in close partnership with our media and project teams to ensure maximum impact here and in the United Kingdom
-Develop close links to UK funding streams should you need significant financial investment in a project (c. £1000+)
Essential Skills:
-Excellent prioritisation to develop only those links that are most effective
-Excellent people/ teamwork skills, allowing you to build strong relationships with stakeholders here and in the UK
-A strong record of delivery, showing you can drive projects through to completion in good time
-A ‘can-do’ attitude, with an ability to find creative solutions to problems. At times, to undertake tasks which need doing regardless of formal job description.
-A strong desire to learn and improve, using feedback to improve output Key attributes
-A keen interest in the Palestinian statebuilding project
-A sound understanding of UK institutions. UK experience highly desirable.
-Experience of working on bilateral links/ project work an advantage
-Awareness of the work of the UK in Jerusalem and the wider Foreign and Commonwealth Office
-Fluency in written and spoken English. Arabic language skills an advantage, but not essential.
-Fluency in the Microsoft Office suite
