The British Consulate General in Jerusalem is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual for the position of Communications Manager.

Objective:

Lead local communications work at the Consulate General. Aim to improve understanding among Palestinians of UK policy on the Middle East Peace Process and our efforts to support the establishment of a sovereign, democratic and prosperous Palestinian state. Inform UK policy-making and Consulate activities through monitoring of Palestinian media and views, reactions and perspectives.


Duties and responsibilities:

-Write and implement a local communication strategy in co-ordination with communication partners (British Council, Department for International Development, and colleagues in London), in support of the country business plan and Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) policy goals. Lead on evaluation of this strategy.
-Identify communications opportunities in all British Consulate teams in collaboration with other UK departments. Deploy appropriate media tools effectively, including press releases, press conferences and briefings, broadcast and radio interviews, and op-eds.
-Set up media plans and arrange press engagement with local media for visiting UK senior officials, ministers and consulate staff, including during visits to Areas A, B and C of the West Bank.
-Closely monitor Palestinian traditional and social media to inform consulate activities, particularly political and strategic communications work. Deliver focused reports on Palestinian reactions in the press and media trends following high-profile events or visits.
-Act as the main contact point with Palestinian media, deploying accurate information and messages, proactively and reactively. Use contact-building skills to ensure that journalists, opinion-editorial writers, and editors give frequent and accurate coverage of UK positions and activities.
-Oversee the Consulates efficient and innovative use of social media to deploy FCO policy messages. Ensure the Consulate website is up to date.
-Manage the Communications Assistant. A successful applicant will use effective management skills to motivate, plan for development, and encourage high-quality work.

Essential qualifications and experience:

Good Communication skills in English and Arabic oral and written.
Excellent organisational skills.
Excellent knowledge and understanding of Palestinian media and political landscape
Experience in effective strategic communications planning and working with media
The ability to communicate clearly, confidently and persuasively when speaking and writing.
Ability to build and develop a network of contacts across the Palestinian media sector.
Good knowledge of social media trends and basic web publishing skills
Excellent IT skills especially in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

Eligibility:

The successful candidate should hold or must be able to secure a local work permit.
Candidate must be able to travel around the West Bank.
