JOB DESCRIPTION FORM
Job Title: Communications Officer
Department/Section: Development Office
Immediate Supervisor: Communications Director
Status: Full-time
Location: Bethlehem, Palestine

Job Objective/Summary:
The Communications Officer is responsible for advancing Bethlehem University primarily through the production of publications (hard copy and electronic) that highlight the vital support of individual, organizational, and government donors as well as the accomplishments of the faculty, staff, students, and alumni in serving the Palestinian society.
The guiding principle for the efforts of this Officer is to enhance communication (internally and externally) and to promote a positive image of Bethlehem University that demonstrates the role of the faculty, staff, students, and alumni in realizing its educational mission of service to the Palestinian society.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Primary Responsibilities:

1-Produce articles for the Bethlehem University website, including a consistent monitoring and responsiveness to the Media Coverage Request Forms;
2-Build relationships with local, regional, and international media, and produce press releases for publication;
3-Design and produce an electronic newsletter for Bethlehem University, and coordinate other electronic communication, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc., with Communications colleagues in the Washington, D.C., office;
4-Assist in the production of the University publications (news magazine, faculty and institute profiles, short promotional pieces, etc.);
5-Participate in regularly scheduled Skype, telephone, and email correspondence with Bethlehem University officials and staff located in Washington, D.C., and in Bethlehem, Palestine;
6-Coordinate and interface with Bethlehem University’s Washington, D.C., office to support outreach and communications needs specific to North America; and
7-Continue the development and implementation of Bethlehem University’s communications plan for internal and external stakeholders.

Secondary responsibilities:
1-Assist with pilgrimage and other groups visiting campus, especially those involving significant donors – and publish articles for Bethlehem University as well as for their hometown media (in coordination with the Washington, D.C., office when applicable);
2-Assist in logistic details for other notable events, such as drafting talking points, etc.;
3-Manage and guide staff in adoption of the publication guidelines for letterhead, stationery, or other official Bethlehem University print materials;
4-Organize and maintain a network of relationships with local and international media;
5-Make Communications Office announcements, when needed or requested, via the internal intranet website, and/or the campus Weekly Bulletin; and
6-Produce monthly reports of communications activity, including metrics on press releases, articles and publications published, and implementation of Communications Plan, etc.

Responsibilities (Such as membership on committees or councils):
Assist the Graduation Committee
Assist the Website Committee

Special Working Conditions:
Availability via mobile phone and email beyond regular work hours for emergency situations is required. In order to accommodate the seven-hour time difference between Bethlehem, Palestine, and Washington, D.C., flexibility in working hours is required so that meetings between both locations can happen in a timely manner, including occasional working hours between 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. or 6 p.m.

Qualifications:
-A creative, results-oriented professional with successful proven experience in professional communications and publications;
-Bachelors degree in English, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or related field with relevant job experience required, masters preferred;
-Three or more years of communications-related professional experience preferred;
-Excellent English language writing, editing and interpersonal skills;
-Fluency in written and spoken Arabic required;
-Working knowledge of copy writing and editing principles associated with the production of promotional pieces. Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills required;
-Must be able to effectively communicate and collaborate with diverse constituencies with varying levels of communications knowledge;
-Experience in higher education preferred;
-The ability to work successfully on multiple projects and to work as part of a team; and
-Capacity to perform effectively under pressure.

The successful person for this position must be able to successfully initiate:
-Interaction with and among Administrators, Deans, Directors, and Faculty of the University;
-Relationships with local and international media professionals; and
-The writing of promotional articles concerning the advancement objectives of Bethlehem University.
