The Opportunity – Community Engagement & Awareness Workers - Health & Nutrition (Causal Worker)

Post location:  Gaza Field Office - Deir al Balah - Subject to change depending on SC priorities

Contract Duration and Level of Effort: Until 31st December 2025.

ROLE PURPOSE: 

The responsibilities of this position include facilitating community discussions and engaging with target groups in Save the Children’s projects. Additionally, the role involves ensuring operational smoothness, supporting communication tasks, and implementing activities related to projects in shelters and locations where the Gaza office operates. Facilitators must comply with Save the Children International’s policies and procedures.

For CEWs assigned to nutrition programs, they will be working at the Nutrition Sites in informal shelters and the primary healthcare facilities. They will be responsible for mobilizing and screening children and pregnant and breastfeeding women for nutritional risks and providing key messages and education to raise awareness on nutrition, as well as key message from other sectors such as health and child protection.

SCOPE OF ROLE: 

Reports to: Program Officer

Staff reporting to this post: None.

Role Dimensions: oPt CO is a high complexity country, multi-member interest, with an annual budget of around $40+m, and 100+ staff. Currently the program is experiencing a growth in funding and complexity due to the war in Gaza.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Key Area 1: Facilitate and mediate community forums.

  • Represent Save the Children and engage with target groups.
  • Facilitate and mediate community discussions through community forum events.
  • Lead community engagement activities within the designated local community.
  • Lead community awareness activities within the designated local community.
  • Direct the audience to the appropriate staff or entities for assistance.
  • Arrange appointments for Save the Children staff as needed.
  • Maintain an adequate stock of office and meeting supplies.
  • Contribute to the planning and preparation of meetings.
  • Organize meetings, seminars, and workshops within the community as needed.
  • Document and report note from local communities to the Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) unit.

Key Area 2: Nutrition Sites and outreach within the community.
At Nutrition Site

  • Provide nutrition education and key messages, with a focus on infant and young child feeding and prevention of malnutrition in pregnant women, breastfeeding women and children under 5years. 
  • Inform about our health, child protection and other sector activities in the shelter/ surrounding area.

At the community level:

  • Raise awareness about the nutrition services provided at the nutrition sites.
  • Mobilize and screen children under 5 and pregnant and breastfeeding women.
  • Provide blanket supplementary feeding.
  • Provide key messages on nutrition as well as health and hygiene promotion.
  • Support the CMAM nurse to follow up on absentees and defaulters from the programme.
  • In case of any outbreak, support in following up on patients and linking with the community if needed.

Key Area 3: Other duties:

  • Ready to work to respond to any natural disaster or emergency anywhere in OPT.

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • College level education.
  • Experience in working with children
  • Public health, medical, or nutrition background will be appreciated.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage and handle a complex and varied workload.
  • Ability to contribute to a small team, motivate staff, work collaboratively with colleagues, and provide support and advice as needed.
  • Willingness and ability to significantly adjust working hours and collaborate with emergency teams coming from outside the sector.
  • Cooperate as needed with organization staff, both internationally and within the team environment.
  • Understand and commit to Save the Children’s vision and mission.
  • Ability to read and understand simple guidelines, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Commitment to Save the Children’s values.
  • Ability to communicate in Arabic.

Desirable: 

  • Any previous experience in working within the Health & Nutrition programs.
  • Ability to use minimum level of English.
