Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent medical humanitarian action-driven organization, providing aid to populations in need, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to the people affected by armed conflicts, without discrimination and regardless of their race, religion, belief or political affiliation (MSF Charter). Within MSF, the Psychosocial Support Unit (PSU) is a team of psychologists dedicated to the support of MSF OCBA staff.
DESCRIPTION
The psychologist / psychiatrist identified by Staff Care Unit will cooperate providing psychosocial support to the teams, either in individual or in group sessions. The local referent will have direct communication and will depend functionally on the Staff Care Unit (psy support), and hierarchically of the medical coordination in the mission.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
- To provide mental health support to MSF, national staff either in group or individual sessions at the field level in person or phone call.
- In case of an urgent need, provide psychological support to the national staff members affected (group and individual debriefing) when delegated by the Staff Care Unit.
METHODOLOGY
- The Psychologist will be available during the agreed service period to attend MSF staff’s requests, or to perform relevant follow-ups
- According to the protocol of Critical Incident, the Medical Coordinator must inform the Staff Care Unit of the situation and together they will decide the way to respond to the incident and the type of intervention expected from the local referent. The intervention might also include meeting in person, phone calls and follow-ups.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct individual and group interventions
- In coordination with the Staff Care Unit, participate in the external referral of those people in need of psychotherapy processes or psychiatric intervention.
- In case of a critical incident, provide psychological support to the national staff members affected (group and individual debriefing) following MSF internal protocols.
- Report his/her interventions to the Staff care Unit and the Medical coordinator. Recommendations will be provided to the Medical Coordinator and SCU. He/she also will share elements that can help to improve staff resilience (e.g., self-care strategies, suggestions regarding the aspects of the job that could potentially be adjusted to avoid further unrest).

SELECTION CRITERIA
Training and experience:
- Professional of mental health such as psychologist or psychiatrist, with clinical and psychosocial experience;
- Good knowledge and experience in staff support, crisis intervention and working with groups;
- Experience providing psychosocial support in situations of conflict, violence (including S.V.) and/or natural disaster.
- Experience on group management and prevention strategies in order to promote resilience among team members.
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office.
- Familiar with Aid work.
Competences:
- High level of communication skills, teamwork, and group management.
- Intercultural open-mindedness (value, interest and openness towards cultural diversity);
- Cultural flexibility (tolerance to ambiguity, disposition to adapt to new situations);
- Social responsibility and initiative (willingness to overcome stereotypes and prejudices);

- Local working language is esential. Mission language (English) would be an asset.
CONDITIONS
- The external psychologist will respect strictly MSF security rules during the field visits. Any breach of security rules will lead to immediate termination of this agreement.
- The external psychologist will keep confidentiality of all information she might access either of MSF or its staff. Any disclosure of confidentiality leads to immediate termination of agreement and MSF reserves the right to complain in corresponding authorities.
