Gender Coordinator
Introduction and Background:
CARE International began work in Palestine (WBG) in 1948, created in the wake of the Palestinian refugee crisis. Over seventy years later, CARE’s scope of work has evolved and is addressing a range of humanitarian needs, and support activities that promote stability and economic opportunities.
CARE’s vision is of a world in which poverty has been overcome and all people live in dignity and security. We hold gender equality to be a fundamental requirement for poverty reduction and social justice, and the area in which we see the most pressing need for global change in order to reach our vision. Together with gender inequality, we recognize humanitarian crises – including conflict, disasters and situations of chronic insecurity – as among the most important threats to realizing our vision for a just world. In partnership with others, we deliver impactful, sustainable and evidence-driven results because of our long-term commitment to communities and our focus on addressing the underlying causes of poverty and social injustice.
CARE Palestine WBG is implementing a project titled “Scaling Up Farmer Field and Business Schools (FFBS) and we are seeking gender coordinator to support implementation of the transformative Gender components of this project. FFBS is an integrated, participatory and transformative approach that CARE uses to enhance farmer knowledge and skills as well as promote access to input and output markets.
The governorates of Jenin, Nablus , Tubas and Jericho with herders of sheep and goats dairy have been selected as primary targets for the implementation of the FFBS model based on the needs of small and medium-scale herders, which have been articulated in recent needs assessments between CARE, farmers/herders and relevant stakeholders in the sector, and based on CARE’s long-term work with said governorates, value chains and market systems including the PS and MoA. to the project will promote gender equality and social inclusion through implementing the FFBS activities. We have promoted innovative animal husbandry and milk processing and marketing technologies and practices for female herders to reduce their workload, address their production and marketing challenges and to protect them from Zoonotic diseases also facilitating their direct access to a range of services, tools, networks, and inputs. CARE works on the agency, relations, and structures to facilitate sustainable connections, supporting them to reach economies of scale and enter new markets, and take up more prominent roles in the sheep and goat dairy value chain (VC), businesses, communities, and households. Palestinian women have long played a significant role in agriculture, but their efforts have not always been recognized, thus leading to inequality in ownership, distribution of labor (i.e. participation highly concentrated at the early stages of the VC), and decision-making. Through the FFBS model, CARE will encourage female herders to take a more active role in the sector by linking them with other women-led community-based organizations and Village Savings and Loaning Associations (VSLAs) and will support their inclusion in different aspects of the sheep and goat dairy VC. Moreover, the model will include several nutrition-related awareness activities such as breastfeeding and its impact on mothers and babies, balanced diet, and best practices on milk handling and processing, targeting the female herders and their household members. CARE will utilize its experience, interventions, and partnerships with health actors like the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS) to support FFBS to provide health awareness activities. Establishing the new FFBS (Pathway 1) will enable CARE to delve deeper into the engagement process with participants, focusing on female herders and their contribution to influence and make decisions, and to support the new learnings throughout the project, to arrive at more equal and equitable dynamics, greater technical skills and knowledge, more sustainable and profitable inputs, more reliable points of access to resources, knowledge and best practices and markets, and to be able to utilize those learnings and replicate /adapt and scale up with new groups and/or sectoral themes (i.e. producers of different fodders, application of climate-resilient management practices in other geographic areas, replication in other areas, adaptation by MoA/ extension agents, etc.).
