Legal Adviser

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of war and internal violence and to provide them with assistance. It also endeavours to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening humanitarian law and universal humanitarian principles.

Main Responsibilities:

-    Monitor, research and advise the ICRC on domestic legal issues and developments,especially in the field of criminal law and procedure, international human rights law (IHRL) and international humanitarian law (IHL).
-    Provides technical legal support to the Protection department, especially in the field of judicial guarantees, and related legal frameworks applicable to security operations.
-    Provides technical legal support to the Communication department for IHL dissemination sessions to authorities and academic circles, as well as in the field of implementation of IHL into domestic legislation.
-    Provides technical legal support to the Cooperation department
-     Provides support to the development and maintenance of a network of legal interlocutors (authorities, Palestinian Red Crescent, NGOs, International organizations) of relevance for ICRC’s work in the Gaza strip

Skills& experience required:

-    Master’s degree in law – with a Specialisation or strong component in international humanitarian law (IHL) and International Human Right Law (IHRL).
-    4-6 yearsof relevant experience in the legal domain (preferably in the field of protection / detention with expertise in Palestinian criminal law and procedure)
-    Excellent knowledge in spoken and written English and Arabic
-    Very good analytical and drafting skills
-    Excellent communication skills.Training/dissemination experience is an asset.
-    Very good computer skills, incl. spreadsheets
