Action Against Hunger (AAH) is a humanitarian, non-governmental, non-political, non-denominational and non-profit making organization working in the Palestinian Territory since 2002.
Action Against Hunger is recruiting in the Gaza Strip a
IYCF Counsellor
For a duration of 6 months.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
Under the supervision of the Head of project, the IYCF Counsellor is responsible for:
- Work closely with mothers, women who are pregnant or breastfeed, fathers, other caregivers and the wider community, to promote and directly support safe and adequate feeding practices for to protect infant and child growth and development, and mother’s wellbeing.
- Together with the PSS Supervisor, lead and oversee activities in mother-baby friendly spaces (MBFS) and other areas within the community, as part of ACFs nutrition programming.
- Collaborate closely, with ACFs PSS staff and activities, to ensure integration of mental health support for mothers and caregivers.
- Ensure programmatic consistency and good collaboration amongst the nutrition and hygiene promotion staff as well as other sectors (FSL) for a comprehensive and integrated approach towards supporting project beneficiaries.
- Overview the design of the infant and young child feeding activities and sessions, ensuring they are implemented in a way that child and caregiver well-being are met.
- Monitoring and reporting of activities, as well as groups and individual sessions ensuring that the impact of team activities is met considering the cultural context for the most vulnerable communities.
- Keep records, monitoring service beneficiaries' progress, and reporting to the Head of Project in line with cluster, internal and project proposal guidance.
- Actively participate in programming and follow-up meetings of activities, sharing good practices and lessons learned that contribute to the improvement of the intervention.
KEY ACTIVITIES:
Objective 1: Assist in conducting community awareness campaign
- Participate in awareness raising activities to promote knowledge about breastfeeding, adequate infant feeding practices, care practices and sexual and reproductive health, general wellbeing and nutrition in emergencies, within the wider community.
- Assist in community mobilization collaboration with other stakeholders to ensure the maximum participation.
- Assist in designing activity tools for the group and individual sessions.
Objective 2: Programmes’ activities
- Provide one-on-one counselling to women who are pregnant and caregivers on exclusive breastfeeding, re-lactation, wet nursing, adequate infant feeding practices, appropriate use of artificial feeding (BMS) to non-breastfeeding mothers.
- Collaborate on supporting documents and materials needed and produce field reports when possible.
- Participate in needs assessments as required (MUAC mass screening, IYCF assessments, etc).
- Provide sessions, discussions, and disseminate informative materials to the target population through home visits.
- Mobilize and inform the community on project activities and identify potential community focal points.
Objective 3: Reporting and coordination
- Regular reporting of field activities to the Head of Project (materials delivered, work achieved, beneficiaries’ attendance, obstacles and constrains) taking into consideration reporting requirements and monitoring and/or evaluation tools and indicators.
- Participate in the preparation of monthly reports.
- Participate in the preparation and collection of data for communication, advocacy and capitalization purposes (case studies, etc)

- Clinical background (midwife or nurse)) or other backgrounds related to health.
- Have in-depth knowledge of Infant and Young Child Feeding- and Care practices.
- Knowledge about breastfeeding and how to support mothers to exclusively breastfeed is a plus.
- Good listening, empathy, good communication skills.
- Skilled to interact with women and other community members.
- The ability to hold focus group discussions and to provide group sessions is a plus.
- Capacity and motivation to learn on the job in a short space of time.
- Clinical experience in maternal and newborn care is a preference
- 2 years of proven relevant field experience in the health and nutrition context in the Gaza Strip. Female candidates are preferred.
- Prior experience in providing breastfeeding counselling is a benefit.
- Knowledge in humanitarian/emergency and/or development programming is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, strong planning and observation skills
- Fluency in reading, writing and speaking Arabic, and at a minimum written English
- Knowledge in Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook
- Valuable prior experience in issues related to the promotion of gender equality or personal commitment to gender equality.
- Candidates from Middle Area are preferred.
