The UNOPS Jerusalem office opened in 2006 and now has sub-offices in East Jerusalem, Ramallah and Jericho. The portfolio includes infrastructure, procurement, human resources, capacity building, access coordination and security projects for partners and beneficiaries throughout the occupied Palestinian territory.
Background Information - Job-specific

The United Nations Office for Project Services Jerusalem Project Center (UNOPS JMPC) was established in East Jerusalem in late 2006. Its aim is to provide the United Nations sister agencies and the humanitarian and development sectors within the occupied Palestinian territory with professional project implementation services.
 
(UNOPS) is the largest service provider in the United Nations system, working on behalf of more than 30 UN departments and organizations. UNOPS Jerusalem Project Center (JMPC) services the needs of the occupied Palestine territory (opt), working in harmony with the Israeli and Palestinian Governments, International Donors, UN Agencies, and others. As the implementing arm of the UN I JMPC manages development projects and provides specialized project-management services.
 
As part of Middle East/Emergency Response Division (EMO).The JMPC supports UNOPS service provision and Implementation in Palestine. The JMPC directly supports the Palestine Program. It provides a range of project management and related services to its clients and partners. The current projects combine logistics, procurement, contract management, personnel recruitment and administration/financial management, institutional reforms and governance strengthening, training, security technology, borders and crossings, and Infrastructure.
 
The Mechanical Design assistant will report directly to the UNOPS Infrastructure Mechanical Chief Engineer and under the overall supervision of the Design Manager.

Functional Responsibilities

The Mechanical Design assistant shall work under the direct supervision of the Infrastructure Mechanical Chief Engineer. She/ he will be required to undertake the following tasks :
 
Technical tasks:
-Review Mechanical systems designs for Infrastructure projects in terms of accuracy, suitability to overall design requirements, including Identifying improvements in the designs and be able to propose practical solutions.
-Design & Analyze Mechanical engineering systems for projects designed in-house as requested utilizing research, development, relevant codes and good engineering practices.
-Prepare Mechanical drawings including plans, sections, elevations, details and other layouts as needed.
-Produce Auto CAD drawings according to stipulations. And ensure high quality drawings that are accurate and that meet set deadlines.
-Review the Mechanical Bill of Quantities in terms of accuracy and content.
-Producing Mechanical Bill of Quantities suitable for tender.
-Prepare and verify technical specifications for Mechanical systems including products, apparatus, services and associated quality of workmanship
-Produce program of works to identify all timelines for the implementation of Mechanical Works.
-Produce Mechanical Engineering design reports.
-Prepare estimates and prices for new project development works.
-Follow contractors obligations of the contractors on site including inspections, testing, shop drawings review, quantity surveying.
    
Administrative tasks:

-Manage Mechanical engineering related material archiving.
-Keep files and records of the design processes.
-Assist in scheduling requested tasks related to Mechanical works.
-Perform any other tasks relevant to the Infrastructure and Engineering Unit when required.

-Good knowledge of  local Building Rules and Regulations.
-General knowledge of the design standards required for a wide range of buildings, and a knowledge of facilities and equipment used by local authorities.
-Knowledge of UN policies, procedures and operations is highly desirable.
-Ability to travel to all sites of assignment within the West Bank.
-Ability to travel between the West Bank and Jerusalem.
-High proficiency with computers in particular MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, Internet, AutoCAD, MS Project, and other related software related to the positions field of expertise.
-Good report writing and oral presentation skills.
-Proven organizational and managerial skills, ability to communicate / negotiate.
-Personal interest, commitment, efficiency, flexibility and willingness to work in a highly motivated team of professionals are required.
-Ability to adapt to difficult working environment, under pressure and with limited timeframes is required.
-Membership of the Palestinian Engineers Association is preferential.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

a-Education
-Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from a reputable University.
-Recognized diploma in Drafting would be an asset.

b-Work Experience
 
-At least three (3) years of experience in Mechanical systems design and construction for medium to large scale building construction projects in the oPt.
-At least three (3) years of experience in water/sewage design.
-Good knowledge in industrial equipment and machinery such as HVAC systems, Fire fighting systems, water treatment systems, pumping stations.
-At least two (2) years of comprehensive knowledge in computer drafting software, particularly “AutoCAD” (latest Versions – 2009 and higher).
-Work Experience with an international Organization and/or UN Agencies is an asset.

c-Languages:
 
Full proficiency in Arabic and English is a necessity
