Product Design Engineer

Role Overview: As a Product Design Engineer at Makers – A nonprofit Palestinian organization specializing in designing and manufacturing affordable open-source products for individuals with disabilities- you will play a critical role in creating inclusive and innovative solutions that enhance the quality of life for people with diverse needs. Your work will involve collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, including designers, Paramedical staff, and accessibility experts, to develop products that prioritize usability, accessibility, and functionality.

Key Responsibilities:

Research & Analysis:

• Analyze existing products and technologies to identify opportunities for improvement, innovation, and alternative affordable solutions
• Stay updated on the latest advancements in affordable assistive technologies, accessibility standards, and inclusive, user-centric design practices.

Concept Development:

• Help generate creative, affordable, and practical concepts for products that address specific challenges faced by people with disabilities
• Collaborate with designers and stakeholders to translate user insights into tangible design solutions
• Utilize sketches, mockups, and prototypes to communicate and iterate on design ideas

Engineering Design:

• Develop detailed engineering specifications and requirements for product features and components.
• Create 3D models and technical drawings using CAD software and other design tools including Fusion 360 or Solid Work
• Conduct technical assessments to ensure the practicality, affordability, and manufacturability of designs
• Ensure accurate and detailed documentation of the product development process as well as prepare final product files.

Communication and collaboration:

• Work closely with cross-functional teams to align on project goals and requirements
• Communicate design concepts, technical considerations, and project updates effectively to stakeholders
• Participate in design reviews, brainstorming sessions, and team meetings to foster collaboration and innovation

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Product Design, Mechanical engineering, Manufacturing engineering, Mechatronics,  Industrial Design, or related field.
• Demonstrated experience in product design and development, with a focus on affordability, accessibility, and inclusive design principles.
• Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion 360) and other design tools.
• Strong understanding of engineering principles, materials science, and manufacturing processes.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
• Empathy, creativity, and a passion for designing solutions that improve the lives of people with disabilities.
• Very good English language
• Familiarity with using manufacturing and fabrication tools and equipment
• Passion for open-source principles, and community-driven innovation
• Ability to work independently, adapt to changing priorities, and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
• Experience working in a Makerspace, Fablab, or similar environment is a plus
