CONTEXT:
BBC Media Action is the independent international charity of the BBC which uses media to advance development worldwide. We do this through partnering with civil society, media and others to produce creative programmes and other outputs which inform and engage audiences on key development issues. We also strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure. THE PROJECT:
BBC Media Action and The Palestinian Youth Association for Leadership and Rights (PYALARA http://pyalara.demo.blue.ps) are implementing a 20-month MEPI-funded drama project, Khaleena Nitfaham. The project aim is to create mutual understanding and tolerance, build civic knowledge and encourage civic participation among young adult audiences in the Palestinian Territories. One of the project’s outputs is the production of a social drama series which will be distributed mainly via online/social media platforms and potentially TV stations. The project’s targeted audience is 18-25 year olds.
JOB PURPOSE:
BBC Media Action seeks a Social Media Specialist/Trainer to be responsible for the creation and management of the web and social media platforms of the project (to broadcast and promote the web drama, provide audiences with an opportunity to interact online and stimulate discussion and, debate about the drama and related topics). This post will also be responsible for monitoring editorial content and providing analysis of user statistics.
The successful candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of writing and editing content for publication to high editorial standards, as well as evidence of sound editorial and community judgement and understanding of the power of online communities. She/he will have a successful record working in an online production environment with demonstrable experience and enthusiasm for social media and interactivity with Palestinian audiences using various social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, You Tube, debate forums as well as emerging platforms). She/he will have an overall appreciation of how audiences use online platforms with the ability to communicate information effectively and engage the target audience for the project (15 – 30 years old). She/he will have original ideas for creative, interactive content to connect with young audiences, encourage their engagement with the characters and the themes of the drama produced under the project. She/he will also successfully stimulate discussion and debate amongst young people about the drama itself (quality, format, characters etc.) as well as the issues raised by the drama.
MAIN DUTIES:
-Train the partner organisation on the effective use of social media.
-Work with the production team on developing social media guidelines and understanding copyright issues.
-Work with the production team on a social media strategy for all project outputs
-Mentor and manage a team of 30 young people from the partner organisation to produce content for the web and social media platforms and conduct online debates and discussions
-Provide editorial leadership for social media teams
-Monitor content published on the online platforms by the general public to ensure it is not contentious, partisan, or irrelevant.
-Develop an analysis template, produce weekly statistics on user activity and advise on improving the online strategy and production
-Link to, and operate with other relevant sites and promote our outreach work with respective West Bank/Gaza groups
-Contribute towards content for BBC Media Action’s social media and online presence
Drama-specific duties
-Design and create new compelling content around the web drama, that engages with youth audiences and reaches out to new online communities
-Set up, update and monitor social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, and integration with programme sites
-Upload project content to the relevant platforms based on the drama’s production schedule
-Produce and edit additional content to use online, such as trailers, character breakdowns, background stories etc. ensuring this is synchronised with webcast of the main story. This will be done working closely with the production teams. This may include attending production and shooting of episodes.
-Help to make content as widely publicised as possible using online influencers, bloggers and audiences to spread the word
-Design interactive content for audience feedback as well as online surveys
-Ensure that the process of webcast and development of additional material remains consistent and timely throughout the project period
Required Knowledge and Experience:
-Creative thinker with a high standard of editorial judgement and writing skills in Arabic based on substantial editorial experience gained in online media
-Substantial web production experience in a working environment
-Experience of working on a youth product, clear understanding of the needs and profile of the target audience and the ability to translate these into imaginative and compelling content solutions, specifically with reference to social media.
-Demonstrable passion for social media and an understanding of appropriate content formats for each platform.
-An overall appreciation of how audiences use online platforms and excellent with the ability to communicate information effectively and engage online communities.
-Evidence of sound editorial and community judgement as well as an understanding of the power of online communities.
-Strong knowledge of current and developing platforms, technologies and tools, coupled with an understanding of how they can be used to communicate.
-Experience collating and analysing stats and qualitative audience feedback to inform editorial decision making
Training/Management experience
-Experience managing and training teams
-The ability to plan and organise time and resources effectively and to manage projects to conclusion according to deadlines.
-Ability to work with initiative, independence and to tight deadlines
-Fluency in spoken and written Arabic.
-Strong understanding of Palestinian governance issues and Palestinian media
-Relevant higher education preferably in online communications
Desirable
-Experience delivering training
-Experience of digital content management systems and basic skills in editing and presenting images, graphics, audio and video is desirable.
