JOB DESCRIPTION
The incumbent of this post is responsible to the Field Family Health Officer and provides technical guidance to all medical staff on maternal health.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
In accordance with established Agency policy and procedures, the ideal candidate:
-Is responsible for examination, management and follow-up of high-risk pregnancies and other women with special needs referred to him/her by the Health Centre Medical Officers and provides feedback to the referring Medical Officers on management plans with respect to such women;
-Examines and treats all women with gynaecological and/or obstetrical problems referred to him/her by the Health Centre Medical Officers according to a rotating work schedule prepared by the Chief, Field Health Programme and provides feedback on the outcome of care;
-Provides necessary counseling to high risk pregnant women on safe delivery and avoiding of another such pregnancy in consultation with medical and nursing staff;
-Where applicable, undertakes regular visits to UNRWA maternity centres in the area/location to which assigned to ensure that equipment, supplies are maintained and techniques are performed in accordance with standard Agency procedures;
-Plans and directs the in-service training of medical and nursing staff on safe reproductive health practices and insertion of intra-uterine devices;
-Participates in the organization and conduct of health services research relevant to maternal health;
-Maintains close coordination with maternity hospitals in order to ensure feedback on high-risk pregnancies referred for delivery or special care;
-Performs such other duties as may be required.
PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES
-A university degree in medicine from a university or medical school recognized by UNRWA.
-A post-graduate degree in obstetrics and gynaecology.
-A valid governmental licence to practice medicine in the Field to which he/she is assigned.
-A minimum of two years experience in gynaecology and obstetrics after obtaining the degree in this discipline.
-Excellent command of spoken and written English
-It is desirable to possess of a driving licence valid in the country of duty station.
-It is desirable to have Leadership ability and previous training/teaching experience.
CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
-Basic Salary: Monthly starting salary $1,402.60 rising by increments to $2,420.00; plus Senior Professional Occupational Allowance of 25% of the basic salary plus a currency adjustment factor (present rate 12.4%) and monthly dependency allowance up to $123.25.
-Contract Duration: Three years including 1 year probation period.
-Leave: 30 days annual leave
-Pension: Provident Fund contribution
-Other conditions of service and benefits may apply
EQUIVALENCY
Candidates with an equivalent combination of relevant academic qualifications, professional training and progressive work experience may also be considered

Where there are two or more equally qualified candidates, selection preference will normally be given to internal candidates, Palestine Refugees and candidates of the under-represented gender. An internal candidate with a temporary-indefinite or fixed-term appointment selected for this post will retain his/her current contractual status and entitlements in accordance with current letter of appointment and applicable Area Staff Rules. With their prior agreement, candidates who are approved as suitable for appointment but are not the selected candidate for this vacancy, will be placed on the Agency’s roster of pre-approved candidates for a period of up to one year, and may be considered for future vacancies in the same position.
The Agency maintains the discretion to fill future vacancies for this position from the roster without readvertising the vacancy.
