Ref: RAM/2024/ED/SM/21 “Enhancing Mental Health and Psychosocial Support for youth in the West Bank"
Background and Justification
Hostilities in Gaza that started on 7 October 2023, and the intensification of violence in the West Bank including East Jerusalem, have had significant impacts on access to all levels of education and learning in Palestine from basic to higher education, severely impacting the well-being of students and teachers.
Recognizing the critical need to address the psychological well-being of affected individuals, particularly in emergency, the MoEHE has incorporated mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) into their emergency response plans for 2024. The UN’s Flash Appeal for Palestine highlights that mental health and psychosocial (MHPSS) support is identified as a priority need within the education sector, given the significant impact of conflict exposure on children, teacher, caregivers and the whole community in both West Bank and Gaza.
In this context, UNESCO Ramallah will support the mental health and well-being of at least 45 youth of post-secondary school age (20-24) who are currently 4th year psychology and social work students across the West Bank and enhance their capacities to deliver tailored peer -to-peer MHPSS services themselves and equip them with self-help guidance to support 30 peers each.
Objective of the assignment
The overall objective of this assignment is to support the mental health and psychosocial wellbeing of crisis- affected youth in West Bank to become more resilient and continue their learning in a more positive environment by providing them with opportunities to participate in MHPSS activities.
