Date: 02 March 2021 Ref: RAM/2021/ED/WA/43
Offers received between (dates): 25 March 2021 -10 April 2021
Background
UNESCO Ramallah Office is supporting the Ministry of Education to ensure youth are able to secure jobs in the Palestinian labour market through empowering them with innovative digital and entrepreneurial skills for jobs in a digital economy and therefore, increase their access to the changing of the labour market in Palestine. Within the framework of empowering youth for the 21st century skills, UNESCO in close cooperation with the Ministry of Education, provided training in 2018 for around 800 students on the development of mobile applications. The rapid development of the digital world and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education became crucial as it has the potential to address some of the biggest challenges in education today, innovate teaching and learning practices, and ultimately accelerate the progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 4 on quality education. UNESCO is committed to supporting Member States to harness the potential of AI technologies for achieving the Education 2030 Agenda, while ensuring that the application of AI in educational contexts is guided by the core principles of inclusion and equity.
In this regard, UNESCO Ramallah Office will be supporting the Ministry of Education in implementing a capacity-building program for teachers and students to develop computer programs, applications and robotics’ devices that can solve economic, social and human challenges and achieve sustainable development. According to data from the robotics industry, the market for industrial robots continues to rise. Thus, both artificial intelligence and robots will replace humans and provide a major contribution to the employment sector in the coming age.
By making Robots and developing Artificial Intelligence applications, students can create their own applications, robotics’ devices and gadgets that interact with the real world. This is a profound and empowering experience, which greatly impacts a student’s life. Teaching Robotics to young students throughout their learning can increase their ability to be Creative and Innovative thinkers and more productive members of society.
Objectives
The main objective of this project is to provide the “best tutorials and training for beginners” in the field of artificial intelligence & robotics which may help them to start making and developing simple applications for real life challenges.
The main output of this training is to develop the programming and electronic skills of the students and trainers on artificial intelligence and its application on real life challenges.
Expected Outcomes:
This training will provide the following benefits related to AI & robotics education:
Develop Skills in AI & robotics and programming skills to implement a practical project, based on AI & Robotics, by each student.
Develop communication, teamwork and co-operation skills.
Share knowledge and learn about and apply community and online tools and advanced technological platforms.
share and participate (i.e. involve with community and online tools).
Enhance the English language skills and learn technical terms.
Create knowledgeable leaders for tomorrow via strong and robust curriculum.
Identify students’ strengths, weaknesses and passion.
Develop high-tech activities in Palestine.
Direct students for high-tech studies in the future.
Support STEM education in Palestine.
Scope of Work
This program will cover basic concepts of Robotics Architecture and Artificial Intelligence. With this program, the target groups will be able to create a simple Robotics’ product and develop AI tools and systems to solve real cases. After this program, the target groups must be able to easily move on to the advanced Robotics and AI courses. The program will classify the courses into two main groups:
Training of Trainers (ToT) training course, and
Students training course.
Those, who are planning to attend the program, would get a chance to know the basics of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. For beginners, it is very adaptive, without any prior knowledge of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. The program must cover topics (but not limited) such as the Fundamental Theory of Robotics, Introduction to Motors (Servo, DC and Stepper), Main Sensors (Motion, Humidity, etc.), and Bluetooth as well as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its relationship with Machine Learning and Deep Learning.
The training service provider (the contractor) must:
Supply all hardware and/or software requirements related to the goals, objectives, and topics of this training program. The contractors are encouraged to suggest all important and value-added options to maximize the benefits for the target groups.
Prepare and submit the training materials and tools as a part of this training program, in consultation with UNESCO and the Ministry of Education. The training materials should be clearly structured and sequenced, considering the low academic level of students in this field and no prior knowledge of trainers who will participate in the program. The materials must cover theoretical and practical content of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.
The Company must suggest the best length and duration of this training program associated with a clearly detailed outline.
In the end of this program (for each target group), a capstone project must be given to showcase what they have learned so far in the courses. Completing the capstone project will make the trainees eligible to receive the certificate of successfully completing the basics of this training program. Moreover, those projects must be different and cover many aspects of our life (Self-Driven car, Smart Home, Agriculture, and so on).
While some AI training kits is available as a black box which may lead to a limited understanding of its functionality by students, the proposed AI training kit must be simple enough to understand and support the flexibility to re-assemble the parts of the kit to match a wide spectrum of customized AI experiments. Each trainee must be able to assemble and build his/her own kit as needed.
The Robot kit should come with rich features and strong compatibility to meet all the needs for different applications to help students to learn the knowledge and skills of mechanical structures, electronic modules and programming at the same time (assemble and code).
Targeted Group:
Educators at public schools from both West Bank and Gaza: 48 of IT teachers (34 from the West Bank and 14 from Gaza), including including programmers and engineers from Directorates.
Students at public schools: 400-500 (7G, 8G, 9G, and 10G) students.
Training Language
The training must be delivered in Arabic with support of English technical terms. This shall include training sessions and training material.
Programming Language
Python language.
Assignment
Under the overall supervision of Head of office and direct supervision of Head of education unit, and close coordination with the Ministry of Education the contractor will implement the following tasks:
Conduct training of trainer’s program for around 48 teachers selected by the MOE.
Provide all equipment and software needed to implement the training programme, suggesting the number of kits needed for both the TOT and student trainings.
Based on the ToT training, trainers should be able to train between 400-500 students under the close supervision of the contractor.
After successfully completing the Training phase, the contractor will submit a full and detailed progress written report on the training process, challenges and overall outcome of the training. The report shall include detailed information on the performance and commitment of every single trainee by name, including a general evaluation of his/her performance using a standardized evaluation sheet.
The contractor will register and document the training as well as the supervision phases attendance diligently and report any absences immediately to UNESCO and the MOE of Palestine.
The Contractor should ensure that students are able to submit course graduation projects after being classified in teams based on their levels of knowledge and practice
Any requests to not attend any training or supervision session by any of the trainees should be reported to both UNESCO and MoE.
The Company must provide all the financial details related to this training program including all costs.
