Mercy Corps is a leading global organization powered by the belief that a better world is possible. In disaster, in hardship, in more than 40 countries around the world, we partner to put bold solutions into action — helping people triumph over adversity and build stronger communities from within.

Positive Youth Engagement (PYE) is a seven-year multi-sectoral Youth Activity designed to address the core issues of Palestinian youth development. The PYE activity will reach vulnerable and marginalized youth aged 10-24 at risk of social marginalization in deprived areas and private universities where they live by improving education, health, employment, community involvement (reintegration) and other needs as identified through drivers' assessments. The activity’s goal is to transform vulnerable youth into productive, contributing citizens who are connected to their communities by increasing opportunities for Palestinian youth to realize their potential and to effectively contribute to social and economic development.

PYE seeks to weaken the push and pull factors that drive youth to fragility and violence by increasing the positive interactions between youth and institutions including community based and university-based youth friendly safe spaces, civil society organizations, potential employers, healthcare institutions, peers, families/adult caretakers, and local government. As referenced in USAID’s Youth in Development Policy,1 the theory of change is as follows: If youth have meaningful and beneficial interactions with family and social networks, local institutions and develop life skills, then they will be less vulnerable to violence and marginalization because a) positive youth development (PYD) activities will mitigate the sources of their hopelessness and b) they will feel more connected to their communities.

Purpose / Project Description:

The Non-Formal Education component under PYE will be incorporated within safe spaces, specifically targeting youth in grades 7-12 in collaboration with local education organizations and partners that are specialized in teaching science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics (STEAM), and the English language. These interventions will offer a flexible, tailored, and hands-on approach to addressing underperformance in related topics among students in grades 7-12. Through more personalized support, mentorship, technology integration, collaborative learning, and cultural relevance, this component will significantly improve youth learning outcomes and academic performance in these critical areas. In addition, PYE will collaborate with the non-formal education partners to build the capacity of volunteer teachers, and youth mentors at the safe spaces to provide basic/foundational support to the target youth on subjects matter particularly after school, weekends, school summer and winter breaks.
