Enhancing Youth Resilience through Meaningful Engagement in their Communities (Jordan Valley and Masafer Yatta) – Area C – West Bank

Background & Introduction:

PFU in Partnership with Oxfam is implementing a new project titled ‘Enhancing Youth Resilience through Meaningful Engagement in their Communities (Jordan Valley and Masafer Yatta)’ which aims to promote and facilitate the leadership role of young people, mainly women, in humanitarian response and resilience-building. The proposed initiative will strengthen the knowledge and skills of youth activists and farmers to engage in collective influencing actions and their active participation and engagement in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in their communities.

Historically, the agricultural sector has played an important role in providing employment opportunities, especially in times of crisis, during which it is difficult to find work in other sectors. In fact, the agricultural sector remains one of the economic sectors that is reported to contribute greatly to the development process in Palestine because of its ability to create jobs and generate income as well as combat poverty and unemployment. This characteristic enhances the role of agricultural sector in strengthening the resilience of Palestinians and increasing their capacity to adapt. It is especially important now, as Palestine begins to recover from the aftermath of the COVID-19 crisis, to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the agricultural sector to aid families who have lost their jobs and sources of income due to the crisis. As a result of the safety measures put in place to combat COVID-19 over the past couple of years, an estimated 60,000 new families have fallen into poverty but all Palestinians were affected by this crisis one way or another.

Currently, one of the most affected groups in Palestine is the youth group, who, as a result of the lockdown, were unable to reach their areas of work and, as a result, lost their jobs. Additionally, even before the crisis, the unemployment rate amongst youth was high and a majority of new graduates were already having trouble finding jobs. As a result, the Palestinian youth became more dependent on their parents or family without the ability to find work to generate income and secure basic needs of their households. Therefore, to assist youth in becoming more independent and capable of holding leadership roles, it is important to promote and facilitate the leadership role of young people, mainly women, in humanitarian response and resilience-building.
