Training workshop for journalists on environmental awareness and environmental media
BACKGROUND
EcoPalestine is the Palestinian affiliate of EcoPeace Middle East, a unique, regional, environmental peacebuilding NGO that brings together Palestinians, Israelis, and Jordanians to work collaboratively to advance sustainable regional development and the creation of necessary conditions for lasting peace in the region. EcoPeace combines top-down policy change with bottom-up community-based constituency building; encouraging youth and local constituencies to call for and lead cross-border solutions to regional water issues that facilitate the advancement of community interests, and showing decision-makers that it is not possible to disengage decision-maker’s environment while highlighting the national self-interests and mutual gain of cooperation.
The concern over climate change and the environment is on the rise in the region. Drought, heat waves, floods, severe weather conditions and storms are increasingly alarming. Air pollution and solid waste are of major distress for the people everywhere. Water resources are disputed, and the land is under heavy human construction and transformation. The Palestinians, as all the peoples in the region, are affected by the deterioration of the environment and the looming disaster if people and their governments did not act and help keep the environment safe.
Awareness is needed to support people and encourage them to act. Journalists and their media platforms can influence the people and give them methods, provide them with information, inspire them and their representatives to develop programs and campaigns and lobbies to safeguard the environment. Therefore, investing in the knowledge, skills, tools and the know-how of our journalists is crucial for that end. EcoPalestine aims at developing the capacity of a group of Palestinian journalists / Media & environmental enthusiast / Journalism Students – Graduates and provide them with the necessary tools to develop environmental stories, investigate issues at stake in our region and entice their intelligence for environmental investigation.
OVERALL OBJECTIVE
Deliver a targeted training program to a cohort of 15 young Palestinian journalists / Media & environmental enthusiast / Journalism Students – Graduates with the goal of augmenting their proficiency in reporting on environmental issues. Specifically, the training will enable them to generate specialized media materials on prevalent environmental challenges and heighten their awareness of environmental risks with a view to minimizing their impact.
